Dorothy Caroline Carpenter Howell, 93, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024. She was born December 19, 1930 in Frank and was the daughter of the late Norman and Violet (George) Carpenter. Dorothy attended a four room grade school in Frank and went on to graduate from McKeesport High School in 1948. She started work the first day after graduation for McCrady Rodgers, Pittsburgh then for G.C. Murphy Company in the Tabulation department.  She was the wife of 68 years to the late Herbert Kees "Herb” Howell, who passed away September 30, 2017.  Alongside her husband Herb, Dorothy owned and operated their family business, Howell Craft, Inc., where she had served as vice president.

Dorothy was a member of Central Highlands Community United Methodist Church. She was past president of The Central Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was past matron and life member of The Order of The Eastern Star #418 of Elizabeth, Past District Deputy Grand Matron of District 26B, Order of the Eastern Star, past Grand Officer of Eastern Star 1999-2000, and a Grand Representative to Arkansas in PA and Grand Representative to New Mexico in PA.  Dorothy was Past President and served 14 years on the advisory board of Rainbow Girls #120 and received The Grand Cross of Colors.  She was a member of The Junior Committee of McKeesport Hospital and was also a volunteer at the hospital gift shop since 1969.  Dorothy was very proud of her organization of The Elizabeth Forward Meals on Wheels, which she created on November 1, 1981. She worked every Monday and Tuesday as a coordinator and was an on again off again president for the Meals on Wheels Steering Committee.  She was an alternate Carter Delegate to The Democratic Convention in New York City in 1980 and also a past Democrat Committee Woman. Dorothy was also a member of The Central Lions Club, Elizabeth Township Historical Society, and The Elizabeth Township Senior Citizens. Dorothy enjoyed dancing, traveling, reading and crafts. She will be greatly missed.  Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Diane Lynn (Jay) McCarty of Monongahela, Marilou K.(Robert) Scerrato of NJ & Fl, and Norma Jean (Brad) Burd of Elizabeth Township, grandchildren, Donald (Sharon) McGowan, Jr., Jason Saputo, Kristy Saputo, Amanda (Brandon) Morris and Shane (Elise) Williams, and Louis and Kimberly Wilson, great-grandchildren, Sean and Makayla Saputo, Serena, Olivia and Bodi McGowan, Cecilia and Margaret Wilson, Alice, Teddy and Benny Williams, Nico Morris and  nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Sturni, who passed away December 11, 2021.   Friends are welcome on Saturday, June 15 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and again on Sunday, June 16, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Township.
