John M. Salopek, age 83, of North Huntingdon passed away on September 2, 2024 at Transitions Health Care.  He was born on August 2, 1941 in McKeesport, a son of the late Michael John and Amelia Esek Salopek. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He graduated from Munhall High School in 1959 prior to his employment as a supervisor with U.S. Steel Clairton Works for 34 years until retiring in 1999.  John was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church as well as the local Penns Woods Civic Association in North Huntingdon and the American Croatian Club in Duquesne.  He was a longtime member of the White Oak Rod and Gun Club, and also belonged to the National Wildlife Turkey Federation.  John enjoyed his Thursday night golf league with his co-workers at 7-Springs, and was a coach for PAL little league in North Huntingdon.  John was an avid hunter and fisherman.  A notable highlight in his life was a 10-day fishing trip to Alaska.  John lived his life to the fullest until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2014.  Even then, he always looked on the bright side.  His family was always first in his life.  He was so proud of his three sons and the responsible men they have become.  John is survived by his loving wife, Oletha "Bunny" Yates Salopek, sons Michael (Charlene), Mark (Liza), Kirk (Sarah), seven grandchildren Ashton, Trevor (Hayley), Alexis, Giselle, Isabella, Liam, and Gavin, two brothers Anthony (Barbara) and David (Ann), and many friends.  Special appreciation goes out to the staff at Amedisys Hospice of Monongahela and Scottdale for the outstanding care they provided. Memorials can be made to them, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.  Friends will be received at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon on Wednesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Blessing Service will take place in funeral home chapel on Thursday at 10 AM with interment to follow at Penn Lincoln Cemetery.  www.shirleyfuneralhome.com
