Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | May 27, 2025
Dolores J. Batch, born on June 8, 1934, was the daughter of the late Howard and Hannah Geraldine (Anderson) Sterling. She grew up on Blaine Hill, Elizabeth Township, PA, and graduated from Glassport High School and the University of Pittsburgh.
She attended Allen Chapel in Elizabeth in her youth, and then St. Paul A.M.E. of McKeesport became her church home while she raised her children. Later, she joined the Calvary United Methodist Church of McKeesport where she served as Trustee, Sunday school teacher, and was on the Pastor Parish Relation Committee and the financial board. She helped with many church events and spearheaded raising over $5,000 for a well in Ghana, Africa which was named “The Jasper Well” in honor of her grandfather Jasper Sterling, a well that is still thriving today. She is currently a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church.
Dolores always said that her “God gift” was sewing. Her love for sewing started in childhood and never left her. Her sewing abilities touched not only her family, friends, and church, but also her loyal customers throughout the United States, and even into Ghana, Africa. All were blessed by her talent. She was also an assistant teacher, then a teacher for the Louise Child Care Center of Pittsburgh, the McKeesport Child Care Center, and the Homestead Child Care Center.
She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Iota Chapter, the NAACP, Elizabeth Women’s Auxiliary of IBPOEOW (Elks), and Pi Beta Psi Sorority. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Meals on Wheels in McKeesport.
