Edward O.L. Redbird “Sonny” Hale, III, age 63, of Elizabeth, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Jefferson Hospital. He was a former pile driver with the carpenters union, a tribal member of the MHA Nation in New Town, North Dakota and a bundle carrier, three clan. He was a founding member of the Pittsburgh American Indian Center working with families and children to teach the Native American culture. He was a 1971 graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School where he was a standout football player, eventually receiving a scholarship to North Carolina State. Sonny enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson and also enjoyed riding bulls, horses, bareback and breaking wild horses. 

Born January 12, 1954 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Edward O. and Lydia (Moore) Hale. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Virginia (Hassler) Hale; nine children, Christy Lee, Edward Orlando Leon Hale IV, Elizabeth Debra Hale, Willow Naomi Hale, Woody Clarence Hale, Sky Billie Hale, Hunter Lydia Hale, Takota Blue Hale and Alexandria Mariah Hale; four sisters, Kim (the late Frank) Pulli of Palm Harbor, FL, Leslie (Michael) Hammerberg of Stanley, ND, Jody (Robert) Brieck of New Town, ND and Faith (Ken) Wright of Amherstburg, Ontario; brother, Alma “Bo” (Carol) Hale of Dravosburg; also, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts and uncles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frederick, Keith and Aaron and a step-father, Timothy Hale. No visitation or services are scheduled. Arrangements by the Paul E.
