Mary Lou Smith, 85, of Bunola, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at home. She was born March 1, 1931 in McKeesport and was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Anna L. Hester Markus. She was the wife of the late Walter A. Smith, Jr. who died February 12, 1984. They were married for 28 years. Mary Lou was a member of St. Michael Parish in Elizabeth Township and had worked for the former G.C. Murphy Co. Home Office in McKeesport, Rost Electric Co., and the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth.
She was a former member of the Elizabeth Women's Club and was an avid bridge player. Mary Lou loved her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Patty Smith of Elizabeth Township, Peggy (Chris) Gibson of Wilkins Township, and Chrissy (Eric Strotman) Smith of Bunola, grandchildren Markus, Miles, and Mason Gibson, Max, Hallie, Lacey, and Julie "Babe" Strotman, and Abigail, Jolene, Maggie, and Rachel Chmelik, son-in-law, Joseph Chmelik of Grangeville, ID, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Walter A. Smith, III on February 12, 1965, daughter, Julie Chmelik on April 1, 2010 and brothers, Albert A. Markus and The Rev. John Thomas Markus. There is no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday April 15 at 9:30 am at St. Michael Parish with The Rev. Thomas Wagner, officiating. Burial will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Parish, 101 McLay Drive, Elizabeth PA 15037 or the Bunola Church of the Nazarene, 371 Bunola Road, Bunola PA 15020.
