Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | March 15, 2020

Gladys Marie George Keith was born September 27, 1923, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Albert Benjamin and Anna Louise George. Gladys moved to Clairton, Pennsylvania as a young girl. She graduated from high school in Large, Pennsylvania, currently known as Jefferson Hills. Gladys met and was married to Deacon Robert Henry Keith Sr. in 1940. This union produced three children Anna Louise, Robert Henry Jr., and Sandra Marie. Deacon and Deaconess Keith were married for over 47 years until his death in 1988.

Gladys loved people and her life was full of friends and family. Gladys was a remarkably sweet and caring person who gave of herself and her possessions freely, generously, selflessly and without any expectation of return. She was employed by the Jefferson Hills Police Department where she retired as a crossing guard for West Jefferson Hills School District. Before his death, Deacon and Deaconess Keith enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally to visit relatives in places such as the Virgin Islands, California, Texas and Hawaii.

Gladys was greatly loved and adored by her family and was affectionately known by many nicknames including Momma by her children and “Baby” (or Granny “Baby”)  by her grandchildren, Aunt “Baby” and Aunt Gladys by a host of nephews and nieces. Knitting, crocheting, and cooking were some of Gladys’s favorite hobbies. Her hospitality was legendary and a visit to her home was always met with a welcoming atmosphere and a gift at departure. Known for her collection of fancy hats, Gladys loved fashion and as a queen on Sunday mornings, she would always dawn her crown to accompany her Sunday best.

Gladys had the love of Jesus. She served as Deaconess alongside her husband Deacon Robert Henry Keith Sr. at St. Paul Baptist Church in Donora, Pennsylvania under the leadership of late Reverend Walter McBrayer. After the death of her husband, she joined Morning Star Baptist Church on March 24, 1991, under the leadership of the late Reverend William Nathan Simon where she again served as a Deaconess and a member of the Ladies Aide.

Gladys Marie George Keith, 96, went on to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Allegheny Health Network Jefferson Hospital. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Robert Henry Keith, Sr. and daughter Anna Louise Jones.

Gladys is survived by her son, Robert Henry (Zenith) Keith, Jr.; daughter, Sandra (Dr. Louis) Williams; grandchildren, Keith (Natalie) Jones, Stephen Keith, Dr. Indi Marie Williams, Dr. Bryan (Dr. Carla) Williams, Marc (Krystle) Williams; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Calvin Benjamin (Barbara) George, Herbert Stanley (Susan) George; sister-in-law, Almeda Pryor; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
