Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | September 15, 2020

Helen McGrew of N. Huntingdon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.  She was born in McKeesport, preceded in death by her husband, Findley McGrew.  She was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Helen was a homemaker and was known in the family as “the best cookie baker ever”! More than anything, she cherished her family.  She enjoyed doing volunteer work for the Norwin YMCA in her 70’s.  She was also a faithful supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Boystown.  She loved working in her huge yard and maintaining it all by herself up until the age of 82.  She mowed the lawn and did all the shrubbery trimming.

She is survived by three daughters, Deborah (Raymond) Dirjan, Donna (Gus) Bricker and Shirley Hindman; five grandsons, Christopher (Amy) Findura, Gregory (Stephanie) McCullough, Robert (Tara) Hindman, Richard (Kelly) Hindman, and Anthony (Kristin) Dirjan.  She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She will always be remembered by her great smile, along with her jokes and that infamous “red hair”.  She will be desperately missed.  Services will be private.  Sincere thanks to Heartland Hospice of Irwin, especially Maureen, Melanie, Karissa and Chaplain Marty, for their care and compassion.  They were like family.  Donations may be made to Heartland Hospice of Irwin, 3520 St. Route 130, Building 3, Irwin, PA 15642 in memory of Helen.  Arrangements were made by the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, PA.  www.shirleyfuneralhome.com
