Edward J. Whelan, Age 71, of Mount Washington passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016. He was born in McKeesport on September 30. 1944, the son of the late Edward R. and Dorothy A. (Clintner) Whalen. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Donna (Whalen) Carroll. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years. Kathy (Bechtol) Whelan of Mount Washington; and sisters. Patricia Kenney (Charles) of Plum Borough and Maureen (Thomas) Schumacher of North Huntingdon. He is also survived by seven nieces.

He spent most of his career as Northeast District Sales Manager for Teledyne Firth Sterling and retired from Teledyne Metalworking Products. A graduate of the McKeesport High School Class of 1962, he attended Duquesne University, where he was a member or Kappa Sigma Phi fraternity and majored in partying and pinochle.

His interests over the years included golfing, piloting a small plane, boating on the ocean near Mystic Seaport and his Irish heritage. Friends will be received at WM. SLATER & SONS, INC., 301 Virginia Ave., Mt. Washington 15211 (412-381-3345), Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Mount Church by Father Michael Stumpf. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles Twp. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Salvation Army, 700 N. Bell Ave., Carnegie, PA 15106 or Kiski Valley Cat and Kitten Rescue, 635 Pine Run Rd., Apollo. PA 15613.
