Mary E. "Betty" (Cypher) Downer, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Arden Courts, Jefferson Hills. Born June 24, 1923 in Pittsburgh to the late James D. and Josephine (Murphy) Cypher, she was a very active member and former Eucharistic Minister at Holy Spirit Parish in West Mifflin and a US Navy veteran of WWII.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Robert G. Downer, who passed away June 2, 2003, and her brothers: James, Charles and Jerome Cypher. Betty is survived by her children Mary Jo Anderson-Vavra of Clairton, William (Suzanne) Downer of Jefferson Hills, and James D. (Deb) Showman of Bridgeville; grandchildren Robert and Daniel Vavra, Alexandra, Zachary, Blayne and Ariann Downer, Jamie, Janette, Andrew, Matthew, and Nicholas Showman; 8 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; sister Joanne Evanick of Elizabeth Boro; and brother William (Rose) Cypher of Palm Beach, FL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 10 AM in Holy Spirit Parish, West Mifflin. Please meet at church for the mass; no viewing is scheduled at the funeral home. Procession will follow to Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Arrangements are being handled by the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, 555 5th. St., Clairton, PA 15025 (412-233-5700).
