Helen Louise Bell 97, a 61 year resident of Coatesville and previously of McKeesport, PA died surrounded by family while in home hospice care on February 2, 2024 in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mrs. Bell was born August 26, 1926, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the late Bernhard Louis and Edna Anna Liedtke Matthews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years; Dr. Robert Lloyd Bell. She graduated from McKeesport High School and attended Robert Morris University. She also studied with the student theater of Pittsburgh under the direction of Herbert Clark.

She had worked for the Philadelphia Company in Pittsburgh and had also worked for her husband, in his practice.

A member of the Presbyterian Church of Downingtown, Mrs. Bell was a member of the American Legion Post 422 in Honeybrook, a volunteer with the Red Cross in Munich, Germany and New York. Mrs. Bell’s local volunteering included being a past board member of the YWCA of Coatesville, a member of the Century Club of Coatesville, a volunteer of the Coatesville Hospital Auxiliary as well as volunteering many hours working in the local Coatesville area schools.

In 1951 she married Dr. Robert Lloyd Bell. They had been married for 59 years. Surviving are one son, Robert Matthews Bell of Coatesville; one daughter Louise Bell Devanny (Scott) of Annapolis, Maryland; and one granddaughter Anna Louise (Boo) Devanny of Washington, DC.

Helen’s burial took place on February 13, 2024 at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Elizabeth, PA. Arrangements were handled by Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177).
