John I. Mitchell, 72, of Clairton, PA, came into this world on June 25, 1952, in Elizabeth, PA. He was the son of the late James Martin and Erma Aggie. He graduated from Clairton High School, where he enjoyed playing sports like basketball and earned a letter running track. After high school, John attended an Apprenticeship program at Rosedale Technical Institute of Pittsburgh, PA, where he graduated with an Associate's degree. The degree allowed him to secure a position as one of the only black Chemical Millwrights for U.S. Steel Clairton Works. He retired from U.S. Steel of Clairton Works in May 2009 after 37 years of dedicated service. His first union, he was gifted with two children, son Kaliffe Mitchell (Marie) of Riverview, FL, and daughter, Johnitta Mitchell of Knoxville, TN. His last union was in 1981 when he met his current wife, Tamra; they united in marriage in 1994, and their union lasted a total of 44 years. In this union, he was gifted with a daughter, Lynae Mockabee-Mitchell, and a bonus daughter, Ebony Jennings (Kevin), both of Pittsburgh. PA. John enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing challenging board and card games like bid wisk and spades as well as socializing with his friends. He spent a lot of time growing all types of fruits and vegetables in his garden and then created delicious recipes.
John departed this life on May 23, 2025, at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Martin and Erma Aggie; sister, Carolyn Wiggins; and brother, Guy Mitchell, both of Virginia. John is survived by his wife, Tamra, of 31 years, Son Kaliffe Mitchell (Marie) of Riverview, FL; daughters, Johnitta Mitchell of Knoxville, TN, Lynae Mockabee-Mitchell and bonus daughter, Ebony Jennings (Kevin), both of Pittsburgh, PA; granddaughters, Sierra Mitchell of Riverview FL, and Laniya White of Pittsburgh, PA; grandsons, Levaughn Mockabee, Kwaymier Mockabee-Riley, and Twon Riley of Pittsburgh, PA; bonus grandchildren, Elijah and Laura Jennings of Pittsburgh, PA; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Nichols of Duquesne PA, and Nanette Webb of West Mifflin, PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.willigfuneralcremationservices.com.
