Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | March 06, 2016

Katherine Ann (Lowry) Swope, 94 of North Huntingdon was called home on Thursday March 3, 2016. Kate led a full and fun life. She loved belting her alto parts with her Sweet Adelines and being with her special friends "The Turtlelettes". Being an excellent seamstress, Kate made many of their performance costumes. She also loved to crochet, making cute outfits for babies all over Pittsburgh. Kate loved to travel spending summers in Stone Harbor, performing with her Sweet Adelines in London, and living in places such as Northern Michigan and Mexico on the Sea of Cortez. Kate was known for being witty, patriotic, having a 10 cent novel stash, and being an avid fan of her Pittsburgh sports teams.

She had a wonderfully wicked (and sometimes naughty) sense of humor. She loved laughing and joking and being the life of the party. She was known for her kick-butt bingo skills and her fierce competiveness; especially in the game of scrabble in which her opponent was doomed the moment they agreed to play with her. Kate was an amazing cook and welcomed everyone to her table. Although Kate never had children of her own, she was Mother, Aunt, and Grandmother to many. After her sister JoAnne passed away, she raised her three nephews Mike, Chuck, and Roy Poole; having an extra special bond with Roy. She was especially proud Roy's children Crystal and Shane and great-great nephew Cori. Kate married Jack Swope in 1982. She inherited a daughter Jacqueline (Swope) Droschak (Allan); and three sons James (Louise), Michael, and Robert Swope, and 8 grandchildren; Amy (Droschak) Lewis, Michael Droschak (Lori), Regis, Joyce, Robert, Dominque, Benjamin, and Christopher Swope; and a great grandson Eli Droschak. Kate is survived by her brother Emmett Lowry (Barbara) and her sister in law Evelyn Lowry (David). In Heaven Kate was greeted by her husband Jack, her parents Milton Stanley and Helen Gertrude (Rase) Lowry and her siblings, Robert, Mary Blankenship, Stanley, David, and JoAnne Poole. Friends and family will be received 3 to till the time of the service at 7 p.m. Monday with Rev. Dr. Clifton J. Suehr officiation at the William Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., 521 Main Street, Irwin, 724-863-1200. Private interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Moon.
