Wilma Fernandez, age 93, of Christy Park, died November 23, 2017, at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. Born October 14, 1924, in Donora, PA she was the daughter of the late Frank and Veronica (Priecko) Urbanik and the wife of the late Louis Fernandez.
Wilma dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was a devoted wife , mother and grandmother. She was employed by the state for 10 years during her mid- life while still keeping up her home and tending to her family full time. She had been President of the McKeesport Little Tigers Mother's Club. She was a member of the former St. Perpetua Parish, where she was active in, and the former President of, the Women's Guild and she was currently a member of St. Patrick's Parish. Wilma was a lifelong New Deal Democrat and, until she became elderly, was active in Democratic Precinct politics. She also loved to crochet and she was a big fan of the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins and the Pitt Panthers, although nothing could top her greatest love, spending time with her grandchildren. Wilma is survived by her sons, Lewis (Catherine) Fernandez of Bethesda, MD. and David Fernandez of McKeesport; grandchildren, Alexander L. currently a graduate student in Pittsburgh, Nicholas L. of Washington D.C. and Mary Elizabeth Fernandez of Richmond, VA. In addition to Wilma's husband and parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Stephan, Anna, John, Albert, and Anthony all Urbanik, Verna Popovich and Mary Huzway. Family and friends will be received at St. Patrick's Church, on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at 10 a.m., for a Memorial Mass. Inurnment will be in St. Dominic's Cemetery, in Donora, at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick's Parish, 310 32nd St., McKeesport, PA 15132.
