Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | December 13, 2019

Geracimos “Jerry” D. Hionis, age 88, of White Oak, fell asleep peacefully with the Lord on December 13, 2019 at home surrounded by his beloved family.  He was born in Kefalonia, Greece on March 27, 1931 and is the son of the late Dennis and Theodora Yakoumatos Hionis.  Although he endured poverty and war, the great earthquake of 1953 which destroyed most of the island, was the main reason he came to the United States for a better life.  Jerry was employed at US Steel in Homestead and was a painter in his spare time.  He has been a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in White Oak which he eagerly assisted many others in building the church.   He was the life of the party, and was known for his zest for life, his generosity for helping others, sense of humor and a passion for hunting and his yearly trips to Greece.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Irene Katsenou Hionis; daughters, Theodora Hionis of White Oak and Stamatia (Thomas) Milburn of North Huntingdon; loving grandchildren, Kristina and Irene “Rena” Milburn; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Family and friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (412-678-6177) on Sunday, December 15, 2019 from 1:00 until 3:00 pm and 5:00 until 7:00 pm.  There will be a Trisagion service at 2:00 pm conducted by Reverend Father William Zotis.  A gathering will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1128 Summit Street, White Oak, PA 15131, on Monday, December 16, 2019 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.
