LaVerne Elaine Redenbaugh, age 77, of McKeesport, formerly of Port Vue, died June 11, 2017, at John J. Kane Regional Medical Center. Born September 8, 1939, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Harry Howard and Dorothy Marie (Bedell) Serena and the wife of the late Charles Orvel Redenbaugh. LaVerne worked as a pre-school teacher for over 15 years. She truly dedicated her life to caring for all children. In her early years, she was a Girl Scout and a Cub Scout Leader, where she especially enjoyed the camping trips with the children. She was a member of the former Riverview Baptist Church, where she was also the Sunday School Director. LaVerne was also on her Highschool Reunion Committee.
She is survived by her children, Charles Allen (Kim) Redenbaugh of Monroeville, Terry Lee (Tabitha) Redenbaugh of Rostraver, Debbie Allene (Jeffrey) Brewer of Elizabeth and Shonna Lynne (David) Michaliszyn of Elizabeth Twp.; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother, Harry Howard (Philomena) Serena, III of Niles, OH; step-brother, Allen Ray Helmick of Littleton, CO; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, LaVerne was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Allene Johnson Helmick Serena.
Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at 10 a.m., in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Ronald A. Banks, Jr., age 49, of McKeesport, died June 4, 2017 at Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville, OH.  Born June 8, 1967 in McKeesport, he was the son of Lois (Downie) and the late Ronald A. Banks, Sr.  He was a former bagpiper with the Macdonald Pipe Band, a member of the Clairton Sportsman Club and the Tau Phi Delta Fraternity at Penn State.  Ronald was an avid hunter and fisherman.  In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters, Josie and Mattie Banks, brother, Dan (Lynn) Banks; niece, Megan Banks; nephew, Jared Banks, and ex-wife and great friend Julie Warf Banks.  Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday from 12-4 and 6-8 p.m.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.  Pastor Alan Olson will officiate.  Interment will follow at Mt. William S. Astrab

William S. Astrab, age 87, of White Oak, died June 1, 2017, at home. Born January 26, 1930, in Duquesne, he was the son of the late George W. and Anna (Dzuro) Astrab and the husband of the late Elizabeth Jean (Kunkle) Astrab.

Bill was retired from the City of McKeesport Fire Department, where he bravely served the families of McKeesport for over 22 years. He then worked at the former McKeesport National Bank, as an auditor for an additional 10 years. He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. Bill was a member of the Corpus Christi Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 701, the PNA and the 11th Ward Club. He enjoyed NCAA basketball, telling a good story and most of all spending time with his family and being proud of his grandchildren. Bill was an original “East Ender,” and loved to share stories about the old East End of McKeesport.

Bill is survived by his children, Kathleen (George) Astrab – Stepansky of White Oak, William Astrab of Stafford, VA and Patricia (Ismet) Adnan of Gaithersburg, MD; grandchildren, Katlyn, George and Daniel Stepansky, William and Sarah Astrab, Noah and Zane Adnan; brother, George W. “Udy” (Joanie) Astrab of Elizabeth Twp.; also many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, June 5, 2017, from 2 to 9 p.m., with the City of McKeesport Fire Department service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Church, on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 1 p.m. Fr. Steven M. Palsa will be the celebrant. Committal with military honors will follow in New St. Joseph Cemetery.

Olive A. Benyak, age 95, of White Oak, formerly of McKeesport, died June 1, 2017, at LGAR Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born September 25, 1921, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Wasil and Anna (Misczycha)  Smolinsky and the wife of the late John L. Benyak.
She was a member of the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Maryann (John M.) Zoscak, Jr., of White Oak; grandchildren, Matthew (Aditi) Wirginis of Pittsburgh, Jennifer (Michael) Mengel of Baltimore, MD and David Benyak of Santa Monica, CA; great grandson, Nico Wirginis; sisters, Mary Belback of West Mifflin, Genevieve Yuna of North Versailles and Pearl Rolnik of White Oak; daughter-in-law, Marie Benyak of Gibsonia; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, John W. Benyak; siblings, Jean Konias, Michael Smolinsky, Stanley Smolinsky and Leona Shevke; and son-in-law, Charles R. Wirginis.

Edith J. Stepansky, age 85, of Palm Harbor, Fl. formerly of McKeesport died on May 23, 2017. Born August 29, 1931 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Helen E. (Dare) Buckley and the wife of the late Leo W. Stepansky. Edith loved spending time with her friends and family and enjoyed beading. She was active in church and at Strafford Court.  She will always be remembered for her kindness and smile. Edith is survived by her children, Barbara Lee (Charles) Zimmer, Leo J. (Lynn) Stepansky, Michael J. (Cindi) Stepansky, Mark E. (Paula) Stepansky; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother James E. Buckley; and many nieces and nephews. Lynne Ann Barnes, age 52, of White Oak, died May 18, 2017, at UPMC Presbyterian. Born July 25, 1964, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of Stephen and Mary (Miller) Oleska of White Oak and the wife of James R. Barnes also of White Oak. Lynne dedicated her life to caring for her family, particularly her son Jeff. She most recently worked as a bus monitor at Pennsylvania Coachlines and before that she worked as a care taker at the White Oak Village Apartments. Lynne was always more than willing to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed the outdoors and knew how to catch fish better than anyone.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lynne is survived by a son, Jeffrey Barnes of White Oak; sisters, Sherry (Oleska) Roskov of White Oak, Darla Oleska of McKeesport and Jodie Oleska of White Oak; brother-in-law, Franklin Barnes of Cannonsburg; nieces and nephews, Christi Roskov, Shawn Landstrom, Melanie and Taylor Ingersoll and Karrie Oleska; also many cousins and friends. She was also preceded in death by her brother Michael Oleska.

Karen Lee Balog, age 68, of White Oak died May 18, 2017 at home. Born September 9, 1948 in Homestead, she was the daughter of the late Martin K. Gillette and the living Dorothy M. (James) Gillette and the wife of James Balog for 30 loving years. Karen loved to go out and dance with her husband and friends. She collected cookbooks and made many dishes from them. In addition to her mother and husband, Karen is survived by her step children, Sarah Balog and David (Danielle) Balog; step granddaughter Kayla DiMeo; step grandchildren Krystel and Danny Balog; sister, Debbie Navilliat; niece, Chantillie Navilliat; nephew, Steven Navilliat, great nephew Brandon Navilliat. Karen is preceded in death by her nephew Thomas Navilliat. Charles “Babe” Mingo, age 89, of McKeesport, died on May 4, 2017 at home. Born April 18, 1928 in Duquesne, he was the son of the late Paul and Nicoletta (DeMichel) Mingo. He was married to his beloved wife Theresa (DeNardo) Mingo for 68 wonderful years. Charles was retired from Tygart Steel where he was a crane operator. Earlier in life, he worked for Kelsey Hays Wheel Company in McKeesport. Charles was a handyman and took pride in the fact that he remodeled his house by himself. He and his wife belonged to a special group of friends that loved to dance. They would stay up late dancing the night away making memories to last a lifetime. Charles went camping with his family a lot and enjoyed duckpin bowling. In addition to his beloved wife, Charles is survived by his children, Annette (Jim) Bryer, Charles Jr. (Christine) Mingo; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his 8 brothers and sisters. Charles J. (Pogo) Puglia, age 92, of McKeesport, died on April 27, 2017. Born in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Joseph and Felicia (Lombardo) Puglia. He was married to Lois (Horn) Puglia for a wonderful 71 years. Charles served with the U.S. Army 85th Division in Italy and North Africa during WW II. He received many medals which include; the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct, Victory Medal, European Theatre Ribbon with 3 bronze stars. Charles was a member of the White Oak American Legion, a lifetime member of McKeesport Sportsman Club. He loved to hunt, fish, and was an all around handy man. He was a former member of St. Stephens Roman Catholic Church and St. Pius V Church and currently a member of Corpus Christi Church. He was an usher and former dart club member. Charles worked for U.S. Steel in the open hearth department at National Tube. In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his children, Judy (Bob) Riley of Mt. Joy, Carol (Mark) Lieberum of North Huntingdon, Joe (Beverly) Puglia of North Huntingdon; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Josephine Uhlyar and Frances Richards, and Benedetto Puglia. Claudia Bondi, 84 of McKeesport passed away peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  Claudia was born March 13, 1933, the youngest of seven children of Russian immigrant parents Anasim and Anna Arashinko.  Claudia graduated from the McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing, as well as being a member of the first graduating class of the McKeesport School for Anesthesia.  She spent her entire career as a nurse anesthetist at McKeesport Hospital where she always enjoyed helping others.  After retirement, Claudia volunteered for Meals on Wheels and kept active at St Gregory’s Russian Orthodox Church where she was a lifetime member. Claudia is survived by her husband, Donald; daughter Kimberly of Tampa, Florida; her brother Jack (Joan) Arin of Baldwin; sister in law Sandra (Ronald) Brooks of McKeesport; numerous nieces and nephews; three cats and grand-dogs Mzee and Mika.  The Bondi family would like to extend their thanks to all of Claudia’s home healthcare workers who treated her with the utmost care and compassion.  Friends and family will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.  Committal at Mt. Loretta Tatarzyn, age 85 of North Huntingdon, died April 26, 2017 at her home. Born June 15, 1931 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Adele (Tomkowitz) Novak, and loving wife of the late Ted Tatarzyn for 54 years of wedded bliss. Loretta was a long time parishioner of Saint Agnes Church in North Huntingdon. She could often be found tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, however her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. Whether it be a surprise visit to the house or one of the many family vacations traveling the world, she always cherished the time with her family. Family, faith and flowers brought her the most happiness! She is survived by her children, Ted (Joyce) Tatarzyn of Rochester, NY, Ken (Denise) Tatarzyn of Brevard, NC, Jeff Tatarzyn of Houston, TX, and Trish (Scott) Saunders of North Huntingdon; grandchildren, TJ (Kate), Jeremy (fiance Madi), Amy (Hersh), Daniel (Maria), Micah, Laura, Patrick, Cory, Grant, Victoria and Austin; great-grandchildren, Teddy, Ellie, Lucian and Shayla; also many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews. Marie Germek, age 89, of McKeesport, died April 22, 2017, at home with her children by her side. Born April 6, 1928, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Gusta and Anna (Balint) Tiffany and the wife of the late Raymond J. Germek.

Marie worked at many different restaurants throughout the McKeesport area in her early years. She then dedicated her life to caring for her family. She is a member of Corpus Christi Church and was a Christian Mother at the former Sacred Heart Church. Marie enjoyed working jig saw puzzles and she will always be remembered for her delicious homemade dishes, especially during family gatherings and holidays.  Marie is survived by children, Darniece Homler of McKeesport, Michael (Christine) Germek of McKeesport; daughter-in-law, Margo Germek of North Huntingdon; grandchildren, Renee (Patrick) Germek Dooen, Amber Germek, Chantal Germek (Brian Pope), Kristin Germek and Heather ( Allan) Link; great grandchildren, Ryan, Jared, Noah, Allyson and Carter; brother, Ted (Dee) Tiffany of McKeesport; sister-in-law, Patricia Ancarana of Port Vue; also nieces and nephews.
