Patricia Hoffman, 73, of Elizabeth Township, PA, passed away Tuesday September 3, 2024 at home after her battle with lung cancer. Born July 23, 1951 in Homestead, PA to the late Helen Sharp Maksymowicz and Lawrence Sharp. Beloved wife of James Hoffman, Patty is also survived by her sister Marlene Sharp Murray, her son Kenneth Bachman, her daughter Collette Bachman Miller, and her grandchildren Kaia Bachman, Rachael Bachman Miller, Anya Bachman Miller, and Kenneth Bachman Jr. She was preceded in death by her daughter Jennifer Bachman Wentroble, her sister Susan Sharp Brown, and her stepfather Walter Maksymowicz. Prior to her retirement she was employed as parts manager at Three Rivers BMW, Bill Gray Subaru, and Yenko Subaru in Pittsburgh, PA. Patty was an unflagging giver, caretaker, and helper. Patty would help anyone with anything at any time. She put the needs of others before herself and was passionate about preserving and strengthening family connections and traditions. Patty loved spending time with her grandchildren and family, tending to her flower gardens, and her rescue Basset Hounds. Patty held honesty and fairness at the highest level. She was a vibrant, energetic person with an infectious upbeat spirit who dedicated her life to improving our community and the lives of others. She was devoted to activating others on local environmental and quality of life issues. She was involved in multiple community causes as well as local environmental causes, especially air and water quality issues. She was always ready to assist others in fighting against things that needed to be changed. Whether it was her work with Yough Communities CARE or community committees, her passion for others and drive will never be forgotten by all those fortunate enough to call her a friend. Her involvement included being a member of the Elizabeth Township Democratic Committee and to help those running for office, helping others understand the candidates and issues, and presenting current concerns to government officials.

James M. “Jim” Surgeon, Jr., 83, of Port Vue, passed away Friday, August 30, 2024 at home. He was born July 12, 1941 in McKeesport and was the son of the late James M. Surgeon, Sr. and the late Elizabeth C. (Duncan) Surgeon. He was the husband of 58 years to the late Carla Sue (Forgie) Surgeon, who passed away February 4, 2019. Jim worked as a steel worker at both US Steel and Copperweld. He was very active as secretary treasurer for the Copperweld Credit Union in Glassport and attended The Port Vue United Methodist Church. He loved vacationing in Rehoboth Beach. Jim was known for his meticulous care of his home, garden and yard and took great pride having his home in pristine condition. He will be greatly missed.

Betty Ann (Law) Thalman, 93, of Elizabeth, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. She was born on August 27, 1931 in Left Hand, West Virginia, and was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Vineyard) Law. She was the loving wife of the late August M. Thalman, Jr., who passed away on December 30, 2019. Betty was a loving mother to her children. She continued to nurture and care for her grandchildren and helped to raise them while their parents worked. Betty was also and important partner to her husband, playing a vital role helping him in his ministerial calling. She was the First lady to her husband, August, as he administered the churches he was pastor to. Betty had a love of painting in a ceramics class, which she enjoyed for many years.

Irene "Nina" A. Cain, 100, of White Oak, formerly of Louisa, Virginia, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024. She was born in Duquesne on January 10, 1924 and was the daughter to the late Rowland and Pearl (Leader) Aston. She was the wife of the late Francis M. Cain, Jr. before his passing in November 7, 1994. Irene went to Robert Morris University to be trained in secretarial duties. She ended up working many years during the war as a secretary for the Mills. Part of her job requirements was to cross trace the furnaces being moved via railroad from Carrie Blast Furnace to the Homestead Mills. She had to climb the rail cars and count the inventory of each car to match her records on the paperwork. Later on, she moved to Virginia, and during her time there she attended the Open Door Christian Church. She was an avid reader and loved studying the bible with her friends and groups that she became a part of. Once moving back to PA, she attended First Evangelical Free Church and joined in many bible studies here as well. Some of her favorite things were her Dachshund/Doxie dogs, and just about any chocolate desserts - ice cream, candy, or cake.

Ann S. Guza, age 88, of Fairview Park, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 18, 2024. She was born on July 18, 1936 in Gadsden, Alabama and was the daughter of the late Clarence Wilson and Evelyn (Porterfield) Jones. She moved to Clairton as a teenager where she eventually met and married the love of her life, the late Theodore "Ted" Guza. They raised their family and lived loyally and happily together until his passing in 1990. Ann worked for Three Rivers Bank as a Vault Supervisor for 30 years. Most remembered for her loving devotion to her family, particularly her grandchildren, and her love of animals, her skill in cross stitch, sewing, and quilting beautiful things which she passed down to her family. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and brain teasers.

Robert "Bob" Terrence Williams, Sr., 54, of McKeesport, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 24, 1970 in McKeesport and was the son of the late James Terrence Williams, Sr. and the late Geraldine Lynn (Pickford) Williams. He was a gypsy soul, who was always on the move. Bob was a lover of music, no matter the genre and enjoyed going to concerts. He was a very personable and happy person, who loved his friends and family, especially his kids and grandchildren. Dorothy M. Brookhouser, 98, of Gibsonia, formerly of Elizabeth Township, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024 surrounded by love and her family. She was born November 18, 1925 in Huntington, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Margarette (Metzler) Boyer. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Brookhouser who passed away September 3, 2001. Dorothy was a member of the Boston United Methodist Church and the choir. She was also part of the Butler's Ladies Golf League and the Elizabeth Forward Community Chorus. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the former Preschool for Exceptional Children. She was a Bomb Inspector at the Christy Park Works during WWII and had received certificates for her service to the war effort. She was a retired dental assistant working 30 years for Dr. Charles Jones. Dorothy saw beauty in everything expressing that joy as an amateur artist in painting and poetry.

Joann Cathryn Patterson, 58, of McKeesport, passed away Friday, August 16, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 3, 1965 in Penn Hills. Joann attended Penn Hills school district where graduated as a valedictorian in 1983 and subsequently attended the University of Pittsburgh where she obtained her bachelors degree focused on child development.
Joann worked for many years as a social worker for Circle C youth & family services, the former North Versailles K-Mart as a store associate, the PA Department of Welfare as an income maintenance caseworker and Seneca Retirement community as a CNA. When Joann wasn’t working a double you could find her at one of her grandchildren’s sporting events from baseball & softball tournaments to cheer & dance competitions. Joann spent years as cheerleading coach for the McKeesport Little Tigers, served on the board for the McKeesport Girls softball league and enjoyed spending any remaining time in the day with her family. She will be greatly missed by friends, coworkers and family.

Ethel A. Hughes, 84, of Myrtle Beach passed away Sunday, August 4th, 2024 after a brief struggle with cancer. She was born in Pittsburgh on July 27, 1940 and is the daughter of the late Rudolph Leo and Margaret Mary (Alles) Anater. A graduate of Indiana University with a teaching degree in mathematics and history, she taught for eight years at Duquesne High School. During that time, she earned a Master's in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She became Executive Director for Public Relations at Median School of Pittsburgh, PA. She resigned from this position four years later after marrying Evan Hughes. Ethel was a choir member at St. Paul's Cathedral, in Pittsburgh, PA. A professed member of the Secular Franciscans for 33 years, she was most recently an officer with the St. Michael's Church chapter in Garden City, SC. Ethel enjoyed traveling, visiting the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe. She was an avid chess player and watercolorist. She lived in a variety of locations including Deland, FL, Tallahassee, FL, Janesville, WI, and Wichita, KS, where she pursued a pilot's license. She is survived by her brothers, Paul and Brian Anater, and her stepson Glenn Hughes. Ethel was preceded by her husband, Evan, and her baby daughter, Megan. Carol Ann Wills, 76, of North Versailles passed away Monday, August 12, 2024. She was born October 9, 1947 in Mount Pleasant, and was the daughter of the late Earl "Squirrel" and Thelma (Glaser) Jourdain. She retired in 2011 as a Customer Service Representative with CVS Pharmacy. She was a Social Member of the VFW Post #8430 in East McKeesport, as well as a member of the Buena Vista Ladies Auxiliary. She loved Bingo, playing cards, Dominos, and Mexican Train. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Walter L. Rook, 88, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 22, 1935 in Scotthaven and was the son of the late Walter and Mary Ann (Quintrell) Rook. He was the husband of 64 years to the late Sandra Jean "Sandy" (Hails) Rook, who passed away January 31, 2020. Walter was a graduate of McKeesport High School and went on to work at Firth Sterling Steel Co. before becoming a Police Officer for Elizabeth Township Police Department for 27 years and retiring as a Sergeant. Upon retirement from the Police Department, he worked part time as a starter for Butler's Golf Course. Walter was a long standing member of The Tall Cedars of Lebanon and was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to "Men's" Clubs almost everyday and going to his hunting camp. When he stopped hunting, he enjoyed riding ATVs in the woods with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter enjoyed spending many winters with his wife, in Florida, they also had a timeshare in Hilton Head for many years, where they enjoyed spending time. He also enjoyed golfing and was an avid Steelers fan. He will be greatly missed.

Richard Michael "Rico" Sostaric, 73, of McKeesport, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2024. He was born in McKeesport on October 9, 1950 and was the son of the late Andrew John and Marie (Dorazio) Sostaric. Rico worked in Maintenance for many years at US Steel - Clairton. He was a member of the PNA bowling leagues, as well as a softball player for numerous leagues through the years in McKeesport, and he played Bass Guitar for the Polka band, the Peppermint Stix for many years.
