Pamela Sue (Kulus) Brown, age 55, of Braddock Hills, formerly of Duquesne, passed away on May 9, 2021, at UPMC Shadyside. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 7, 1965, she was the daughter of Constance Tassone (Dombrosky) and the late Thomas Kulus. She was a former legal secretary for a Pittsburgh law firm and a longtime waitress at Pizza Hut-Duquesne. She loved being with her family, which was everything to her, and she enjoyed going to Kennywood, lottery tickets and her cat, Pumpkin.

She was the wife of the late Paul Afanasieff. Survivors include her mother, Constance (Tassone) Dombrosky and her step-father, Gerald Dombrosky of Elizabeth Twp.; daughter, Heather Brown of North Braddock; siblings Thomas (Jacqueline) Kulus of West Mifflin, Cindy (Jim) Capell of Monroeville and Marie (Bryan) Krasneski of South Park. She was a doting and loving aunt of Tanner, Bennett and Ethan Kulus, Katie and Jimmy Capell and Ariana and Colton Krasneski; step-mother of Jesse Afanasieff and step-grandmother of Shane and Cailey Afanasieff.

James P. “Jimmy” Maxwell, age 76, of West Mifflin, passed away on May 9, 2021, at home. Born in Homestead on May 8, 1945, he was the son of the late Perry and Lillian (Kennedy) Maxwell. He was a retired machinist from U.S. Steel-Homestead Works, a member of Homeville Christian Church, Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsman Club and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jimmy was the beloved husband of 55 years to Mary Lou (Downie) Maxwell; father of Gina Maxwell Caito of West Mifflin and Robin (Vanessa Suncine) Maxwell of West Mifflin; grandfather of Tomilyn (Jamie Miller) Caito, Roman (Jenn) Caito, and Taylor (Jason) McCall; great grandfather of Owyn Miller, Landon Caito, Sienna Caito, and Carmine Caito; brother of Cheryl (Dan) Wehrer of West Mifflin and Kim (Mike) McElroy of West Mifflin.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Edmund S. Lewandowski, will be celebrated on May 15, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., at Holy Name Church, Duquesne, of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, with his son, the Rev. Thomas Lewandowski, as principal celebrant.

Edmund passed away last April, during the Covid-19 pandemic, at the Locust Grove Personal Care Home. Born May 9, 1922 in Nowa-Wies-Wielka, Poland, he was the son of the late Jozef & Anastazia (Siemiankowska) Lewandowski.  He was a retired letter carrier in Duquesne, a member of Christ the Light of the World Parish in Duquesne, a former insurance salesman for the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America, member of the former Holy Name Society of the former St. Hedwig Church, member of the Polish War Veterans of WWII,  American Legion, the Polish National Alliance, the Polish Club of Duquesne, Teutonia Mannerchor Club of Duquesne, National Association of Letter Carriers and the Loyal Order of the Moose. 

Edmund enjoyed being surrounded by family especially celebrating birthdays.  He enjoyed sharing travel stories with his grandkids while drinking French wine.  He listened attentively while the great grandkids came to visit. He served in the Polish Army as a 2nd Lt. during WWII and was a prisoner of war for 4 years.  He was the beloved husband of 53 years to the late Blanche L. (Belback) Lewandowski, who died on March 19, 2004. 

He was the father of Dennis (Judy) Lewandowski of Plum Boro, Rev. Thomas J. Lewandowski, Parochial Vicar at Immaculate Conception Parish in Washington, PA & College Chaplain at Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, and California University of Pennsylvania, and the late Anthony Lewandowski; grandfather of Kristen (Steve) Lichius & Michael (Kristen) Lewandowski; great grandfather of Ava and Ryan Lichius and Mary Lewandowski; brother of Regina Smolka and predeceased by brothers & sisters Anthony Lewandowski, Apolinary Lewandowski, Fr. Dominik Lewandowski, and Sr. Aurelia Lewandowski, S.O.E.

John M. “Jay” Gorda Sr., age 67, of Duquesne, passed away on May 1, 2021 at UPMC McKeesport. Born in McKeesport on April 2, 1954, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Wargo) Gorda. He was a former steelworker at U.S. Steel-Duquesne Works, a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Name Church, a former commandant of the East McKeesport League-Hesse-Waldron Detachment and proudly served his country in the Marine Corps and helped with Toys 4 Tots. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and reminiscing about riding when he couldn’t. He was the husband of the late Terri L. (Marcus) Gorda; father of Richard Gorda, Debra (Sean Patterson) Gorda, John Gorda Jr., Shawn Gorda and Robert Gorda; grandfather of Erik Patterson, Mackenzie Patterson and Adelina Brown; brother of Kathleen M. Born on June 9, 1985, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Karen (Seibel) Benvin of West Homestead and her late step father David Benvin and the late Charles Sloss. She was the co-owner of Pizzarella in West Mifflin, a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Name Church and a former pharmacy tech at Jefferson Hospital and Penn-Taft Pharmacy. 

She was the best wife and mother that anyone could ask for and she loved to spend time with her family and go shopping. Jamie was the loving wife of 14 years to Bradley J. “Brad” Chonko; mother of Rylee Chonko and Gabriella Chonko, both at home; sister of Sara (Ralph) Marsico of Elizabeth, Carly Sloss of West Mifflin, Ashlee (Phil) Fox of Michigan, and Orlando Hale of North Dakota; granddaughter of Nada (late Charles) Sloss of West Mifflin and the late Dot Seibel; daughter-in-law of Jimbo and Marie Chonko of West Mifflin; sister-in-law of Christopher (Kari) Chonko of Jefferson Hills.

Raymond C. Merisko, of West Mifflin, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021, and entered the gates of Heaven. He was born on November 4, 1931 in McKeesport, PA. He was the beloved husband of 54 years to Rose (Bilski) Merisko. He loved his family; father of James (Cheryl) Merisko of Illinois, Daniel Merisko of Butler, PA and Dianne (Keith) Kuzma of Jefferson Hills, PA; grandfather to Samantha and Joshua Merisko, Dustin Martin, Kaley and Corey Kuzma; great grandfather to Sophia Gonzales.

Ray was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years as a carrier and manager,and served 11 1/2 years in the Naval Reserves. He was the first Lector and Eucharistic Minister at Holy Name Church in Duquesne, member of the Men’s Club and taught in the CCD program for 17 years. He proudly served as Grand Knight with the Duquesne-West Mifflin Knights of Columbus Council #4210, was a coach for Duquesne Little League for 12 years, enjoyed golf, bowling and fishing.

Loving husband, father, grandfather, Dr. Joseph E. Michaels, PhD, age 81, of Whitehall, formerly of Duquesne, passed away at home, on Good Friday, April 2, 2021. Born on October 13, 1939, in Duquesne, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Margaret T. (Curran) Michaels. Joseph attended Duquesne High School and joined the Navy after graduating. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Duquesne University and earned a Bachelor’s degree. He went on to the University of Pittsburgh to earn his Master’s degree and Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD). He was a teacher, dean, and principal for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, most recently Overbrook Elementary and he retired from Spring Garden Elementary. He was active in the Baldwin-Whitehall community in the Baldwin Manor Association, local speaker for the Whitehall library on historical topics, volunteered at the election polls and founded the Whitehall Aviation Modeler Associations. He authored 3 books on aviation aircraft and was an avid photographer who built model airplanes and enjoyed aviation photography.

Ron was the owner of McKee Asphalt Paving Co. in Duquesne for 50 years and enjoyed going to the casino and making sure his vehicles were impeccable. He was the husband of the late Geraldine (Huwalt) McKee; father of Debra (Ron) Kurta of Duquesne, Michelle (John) O’Donnell of North Versailles, Ronald “Butch” (Stephanie) McKee Jr. of West Mifflin, Michelle (Steve) Guffey of North Huntingdon, Cynthia (late Patrick “Mick”) Mains of White Oak; brother of Robert (Gina) McKee of White Oak, Noreen (Bill) Dirling of McKeesport, and late Jean (husband Tom survives) O’Neil; companion of Denise Garvey of Canonsburg; and also survived by Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews. Frank worked in construction and liked to work on cars. Eugenia “Jeanie” Slutyak Longcrier, age 82, of Duquesne, passed away at home on March 3, 2021. Born in Duquesne on August 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Potoma) Slutyak Sr. Jeanie was a graduate of Duquesne High School and the Robert Morris School Secretarial Division and over the years worked at Alcoa and US Steel, ultimately retiring from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. In 1976 she married Alfred M. Longcrier and, sadly, was widowed upon his untimely death in 1982. Jeanie was a lifelong active member of the former St. Nicholas R.O. Church, Duquesne, President of the St. Nicholas R.O. Cemetery Corporation and current parishioner of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, McKeesport. A feisty, independent woman, with a dry sense of humor, Jeanie was dedicated to her faith, her church and her family. She was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams.

Joseph F. Skalican, age 95, of West Mifflin, passed away on March 8, 2021, at Harmar Village Care Center-Cheswick. Born in Duquesne on March 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Meschanik) Skalican. He was retired from U.S. Steel-Duquesne Works as a Motor Inspector, was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Trinity Church, West Mifflin, a member of their Men’s Club, worked at the Church fish fry for many years, and he proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He enjoyed taking care of fruit trees, his vegetable garden, and flower beds & hedges, liked to go dancing and was an avid coffee drinker. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Veronica (Dudash) Skalican; father of Juliann F. Skalican and her husband, Geoffrey Crowe of Penn Hills; grandfather of Julia Marion Crowe (Adam); and is also survived by in-laws, Donald Rausch and Margaret Forsythe and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald J. “Jerry” Pysk Sr., age 66, of Braddock, passed away on March 4, 2021, at UPMC Shadyside.  Born in Braddock on July 3, 1954, he was the son of the late Edward and Helen (Kerestes) Pysk. He was a Sales Rep for Regent R.C. Cola, former manager of the Buy & Fly on 21st & Carson in the South Side, and former member of L.O.O.M in East Pittsburgh and the Slovak Club in Braddock. Jerry was an avid bowler with a perfect 300 game. He was also a valued employee of the former Schleifer Funeral Chapel in North Braddock. Jerry was the beloved husband of 42 years to Cheryl (Szekely) Pysk; father of Gerald (Amy Maegle) Pysk Jr. of Whitehall and Andrea Nicole Pysk of Braddock; son-in-law of Florence Szekely of Braddock and the late Rudy Szekely; and is also survived by many cousins.
