Heaven gained an Irish twinkler, though Talbots shares may have dipped, on November 23rd with the passing of Lois Maloy, just two days shy of her 99th birthday. Clever, impish, and able to find the funny side of anything, Lois was unforgettable and deeply loved by all who knew her.
Born November 26, 1926, to Big Jim and Lydie (Rank) Maloy on Halcomb Avenue in Clairton, PA, Lois lost her older brother early in life but became the apple of her father’s eye. She lived for 75 years in the same house her dad built the year she was born—a home that also welcomed every Maloy aunt and uncle who needed a “temporary” place to stay but rarely moved out. She loved her family, her street, and the Lepri neighbors who became part of her extended clan.
Lois graduated from Clairton High School in 1944 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Penn State in 1948. In 1950, she joined the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office under Jim Malone, typing indictments for the likes of Pete Flaherty and Judge Silvestri Silvestri—and meeting her lifelong best friend, Joanie Fleckenstein.
Lois loved to work—or more accurately, she loved getting dressed up and going downtown. And did she ever dress: gloves, hats, handbags, scarves. Pure old-school class. She was whip-smart, wickedly funny, and brutally honest. No one ever left a conversation wondering, “What did Lois mean by that?”
In her younger years, if Lois wanted a vacation and didn’t have leave time, she simply quit, knowing she could always “find another job.” After a stint at USS (not USX), she found her true calling when Silvestri Silvestri was elected Judge to the Court of Common Pleas in 1968.The Judge met his match in Lois. She ran a tight ship alongside unforgettable colleagues—tipstaffs John and Ed, and the legendary clerk Dawn O’Brien.
Their caseload often involved “complex” matters, usually meaning the Judge wrote pages of decisions longhand while Lois typed, cut, pasted, and retyped. Their daily lunch-hour walk down Fifth Avenue to Wood Street and back on Fourth became a ritual: greeting every lawyer in town, sampling treats, and laughing without saying a word.
After Judge Silvestri’s passing, Lois briefly considered retirement but instead joined Supreme Court Justice Stephen Zappala, where she became known for her gift of helping every caller—court-related or not.
Although she never married, Lois had plenty of children to care for. She adored Madeline Jackel’s three boys—Guy (Cheri), Bruce and Mark (Jean), and—and served Christmas breakfast to the Jackel family for decades. She was “Aunt Lois” to Joanie’s children—Stacey, Leslie, and Bob—and to their children as well.
Her lifelong car obsession began with Big Jim’s dealership. She needed a new car every two years—always white—and washed it daily.
Her adventures with Joanie spanned more than 60 years: Conneaut Lake in the 50s, Atlantic City beaches, and later, winter trips to Isla Del Sol, Florida. They made treasured friends, joined the American Legion thanks to Lois’ Civil War ancestry, and were greeted by name at their favorite Steelers bar. Their navigation challenges on drives to Florida became legendary—fixed only when they changed the TomTom GPS to a British voice.
When Joanie passed, the transition was difficult, but new friends stepped in. Cheri Jackel escorted every two weeks to Lora Pittman, Lois’ hairdresser for 42 years. Patty Maedinger, brought a fresh kind of fun: candy-store drives, Monday lunches at Tavern on the Hill, and dessert always first—served only on a properly ironed tablecloth. Eggnog was their shared weakness. And Sherri Kearns’ crew brought daily adventures: manicures, church visits, and feeding deer on the patio. Lois was loved fiercely until her final breath.
Lois loved laughter and the people she laughed with—and sometimes at. Her kindness, her sparkle, and the way she made others feel were her greatest gifts. In her honor, make someone laugh today.

He had a lifelong love of basketball, playing in church leagues, Pittsburgh leagues, and Norwin leagues. He was also passionate about cooking, and his famous egg rolls, adobo, and pancit were always a hit with family and friends. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Alfredo was a proud “baseball dad,” coached flag football, and served as an official for his daughter’s swim team. He had a gift for turning anything into a game and was truly a big kid at heart. He was an adoring Grandfather, who was affectionately known as "Lolo". Loretta graduated from the University of Pittsburgh's Nursing program. After, she became a psychiatric nurse, spending many years caring for patients during times of crisis at Western Psychiatric Hospital before eventually retiring.
Loretta's journey was marked by unwavering resilience and commitment to her community. Loretta made history on January 4, 2011, when she was elected as the first African American to serve as vice president of the McKeesport City Council. She told a reporter, "I got unanimous votes, and I couldn't believe it. It feels good. Whenever I ran for council, I was the first Black ever endorsed in this town." Loretta's achievement was not solely a personal triumph; it was a tribute to her family's legacy of activism and perseverance. Her grandparents fought tirelessly for the right to vote in Georgia, a struggle that deeply influenced her lifelong dedication to public service. As she recalled, "I'm a wise old lady. I've been in politics ever since I came to McKeesport, and that's been 40 years. My grandparents were in Georgia, and they fought really hard to get the right to vote, so this has always been important to me."

George Neil Stewart III, more widely known as “Joe” or “Papa Joe” to those who loved him, and to whom the descriptor, “The Man, The Myth, The Legend,” unequivocally applied, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025. He was surrounded, during his last days, by his loving family and close friends, especially his devoted wife, Debbie, who rarely left his side. Joe was the son of the late George N. Stewart II and Patricia Regan Stewart. He was born on November 15, 1936, in Chicago, IL, but spent his formative years in Manor, PA where he and twin sister, Patricia Johnson (Robert) were the oldest of 6 siblings, including Judith Nedley (the late Jerry), the late David Stewart (the late Helga), Daniel Stewart (Donna) and Michael Stewart (Karen). Joe’s childhood was full of great legend, lore, and utter amazement to all who lived it or have heard the tales, particularly the younger generations of the Stewart Clan.
Joe excelled academically and athletically at Irwin High School where he graduated with the Class of 1955. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and remained a loyal Panthers fan to the dismay of several of his children who attended Penn State. Along with the late Elaine Teck Stewart, Joe raised his 6 children in Irwin, including George N. Stewart, IV (Nancy), Michelle S. Baker (Martin), Christopher J. Stewart (Barbara), Daniel M. Stewart (Marty), Colleen Stewart-Tretter, Jim Tretter, and the late Lisa S. Black (Pete), who, sadly, predeceased him by three months.
Joe married his beloved Deborah J. “Debbie” (Abbatangelo) Stewart in 2005 and, in the ensuing years, enjoyed the embrace of Debbie’s children, Holly Thurman (Tim) and David Christian (Laurie), who were welcoming of him and his boisterous family.
Papa Joe was particularly close to his 17 grandchildren (Benjamin, George V, Claire, Colin, Madison, Evan, Jesse, Jacob, Daniel, Nicholas, Joseph, Paul, Cooper, Case, Timothy, Frances and Sydney) and his 4 step-grandchildren (Brooke, Lily, Connor, and Nico), all 21 of whom he delighted with astonishing life stories, Boxing Day celebrations, and impromptu calls or visits, as well as his 16 (and counting) great-grandchildren, the newest of whom he greeted to the Stewart Clan just weeks ago. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, Joe is survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends. While effortlessly garnering the adoration of his family, Joe had the undeniable knack for making friends wherever he went.
He was also quite proud of his Scottish heritage, even convincing Debbie to be married with full Highland attire, complete with bagpipes. Deb similarly introduced Joe to her proud Italian traditions and exceptional cooking, all of which he thoroughly enjoyed over the years.
Joe spent much of his earlier career as a “salesman extraordinaire” in the school yearbook and class ring industry, and then in commercial graphic sales. Most recently he worked as a successful roofing estimator and crew coordinator and for the Maloy-Schleifer Funeral Home in Duquesne assisting with funerals and “co-piloting” the hearse.
Joe was a competitive athlete in his youth, enjoying wrestling, basketball and baseball. He later embraced the 1970’s tennis craze, leading to successful competition on many USTA teams. As talented as he was, Joe’s true calling and greatest impact was upon the hundreds of kids he coached spanning decades, starting with the Irwin PeeWee Basketball and Baseball leagues of the 1970’s into the 2000’s when he served as an assistant tennis coach at Norwin High School and, finally, Greensburg Salem High School. Joe’s guidance of young people extended to several who became “family” in the Stewart household. Joe’s competitive fire was not limited to sports. He enjoyed playing cards, particularly Hearts, Spades, Euchre and Pinochle, and amazed many with his ability to “communicate telepathically” to his partners, which, eventually, became the subject of suspicion from his opponents, specifically his children and grandchildren.
Finally, Joe held his Catholic faith dearly. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin for many decades. In later years, he was active at Christ the Light of the World Parish in Duquesne and, most recently, at St. Michael’s Church of Saints Joachim and Anne Parish near his home in Elizabeth.
The Stewart Family would like to thank the medical teams at the UPMC Mercy Neuro-Trauma Care Units and UPMC Family Hospice, all of whom so kindly and professionally cared for Joe, his family, and friends in his unexpected final days.
Family and friends will be received from 3-8 p.m., on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the MALOY-SCHLEIFER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 915 KENNEDY AVE., DUQUESNE, 15110, 412-466-3300, WILLIAM B. SCHLEIFER, SUPERVISOR, WILLIAM BRIAN SCHLEIFER AND ALLAN J. WEBER, FUNERAL DIRECTORS. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Michael’s Church of Saints Joachim and Anne Parish, Elizabeth, with Rev. Thomas Burke officiating, assisted by Rev. Thomas Lewandowski and Rev. Thomas Dansak. Everyone should meet at Church.
