John W. “Jack” Canavan, age 70, of West Mifflin, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2022. Born in Braddock on September 13, 1952, he was the son of the late John “Hoppy” and Alice (Ambrose) Canavan. He was a retired line cook at Paule’s Lookout restaurant, was a huge Elvis fan and enjoyed drawing sketch art. Jack is the brother of his twin sister Jill (late Jeff) Paule of West Mifflin and the late Pat (wife Christine survives) Canavan of West Mifflin; and uncle of P.J. and Melanie, Jeff and Marissa Paule, Marc and Theresa Paule, late Ricky (his wife Wendy survives) Paule. Eleanor M. Monaghan, age 87, of Duquesne, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at UPMC Presbyterian. Born in Linesville, PA on September 3, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Salter) Ballas. She was a former clerk at Hills and Ames Department Stores in West Mifflin and contributed to numerous Church missions. Eleanor was the wife of the late William G. Monaghan; mother of Lynn Monaghan of Vandergrift and the late Gregory Monaghan; grandmother of Alissa (Ben) Caparelli of Mt. Washington, Stephen (fiance, Crystal Layhue) Monaghan of Mt. Tina M. Costello, 66, of West Mifflin, passed away, in her home, on Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Tina was a graduate of West Mifflin North High School. Her job was as a licensed manicurist at Phalanges in Monroeville, PA. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Joseph Costello and daughters Cecelia and Tony Hermankevich and Amanda Costello. Tina had one grandson, Greysen Myszco. She is also survived by brothers Gary Maglicco (Kathy) and Paul Maglicco (Donna). She was pre-deceased by her parents Pasaquale “Patsy” and Cecelia (Hlad) Maglicco. Tina was dedicated fully to her faith and her family. George A Halyama, age 79, of West Mifflin, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at Jefferson Hospital. Born in Connellsville on December 11, 1942, he was the son of the late Carl and Elizabeth (Chorpenning) Halyama. He was a retired diesel mechanic for U.S. Steel-Edgar Thompson Works, a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Name Church and the Dravosburg American Legion, sang with the Belaires, and enjoyed gardening. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War and was in the Naval Reserves. Eunice “Jo” Znavor, 69, of North Huntingdon, passed away, surrounded in love with her family by her side, on November 1, 2022. She was the oldest daughter and “favorite child” of the late William and Patricia (Cloonan) Gibbons. She proudly grew up in Duquesne, until she met Jack, the love of her life for over 48 years. Together, they raised a beautiful family. She leaves behind her children to carry on her family traditions. Brian (Laura) of North Huntingdon, Kevin of North Huntingdon and Maura (Bernie) Ponko of North Huntingdon and the grandchildren that she adored Lia Guzzie, Joey Znavor, Gretta and John Ponko.
After her mother passed, she became the family matriarch, always the glue that kept the family together. She was the loving sister of Mary (Jim) Bick of West Newton, Maggie(late Cookie Chiponis)of West Mifflin, and Colleen (Tom) Washko of North Huntingdon. She treated her many nieces and nephews like they were her own children. Jo was preceded in death by her siblings William “Gibby “Gibbons, Patti (late Bill Lutz), and Jimmy “Gibby” Gibbons.
Jo was a retired nurse and caretaker over the years to many. She was happiest when her house was full of laughter, participating in multiple conversations in different rooms all at the same time. An avid QVC shopper, as long as it was on sale. “Eun” enjoyed a good book and loved to binge watch Law &Order.
She was the head of the table, ready to drink a glass of wine and gossip with her sisters. Cheers to you Jo.

Dorothy M. (Traud) (Jugan) Macioce, age 85, of Munhall, formerly of West Mifflin, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at home, in the presence of her family. She was born in West Mifflin on March 7, 1937 to the late Joseph and Mercedes Traud. Dorothy will be greatly missed but never forgotten. A member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, St. Therese Church, she was also an avid Steelers fan and her hobbies included crocheting, diamond art, bingo, gambling and card playing. She was a member of the I.S.D.A. and A.A.R.P. and made blankets and scarves for the veterans. Dorothy is survived by her devoted daughter, Sandy (Ken) Kracinovsky of Bethel Park and sons, Paul (Cindy) Jugan of Eagle River, Alaska and Vince Macioce of Pittsburgh. Valeria E. (Miklos) Mattis, affectionately known to many as “Mother Val,” died on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Jefferson Hospital, surrounded by her children, at the age of 83. Born in Duquesne, PA on April 2, 1939, she was the youngest of twelve children to Andrew and Helen (Kushnir) Miklos. She married the late Michael T. Mattis on August 29, 1964. She is survived by son Michael (Amy) of White Oak, daughter Monica, with whom she resided, of McKeesport, son William (Tina) of West Mifflin and son Christopher (Paul-James Cukanna) of Churchill; grandsons Michael (Kayla), Ryan, Nicholas, and Jonathan; great grandson Michael John; sister Charlotte (Donald) Nasta of Levittown, PA; in-laws Joseph and Barbara Mattis of Finleyville, PA; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Theresa Mattis (August, 2022), her husband and parents, her parents-in-law Michael and Anna (Hlad) Mattis, and siblings, Helen Miklos, Elizabeth Miklos, Margaret Miklos, Alexander Miklos, Andrew “Timmy” Miklos, Bernard Miklos, Virginia Miklos, Gertrude Motel, Rosalia Miklos and Philomena Demeter.
A 1957 graduate of Duquesne High School, Valeria worked as a Tele-Typist at Fisher Scientific and later as an Administrative Assistant in the Housing Office at Carnegie Mellon University.
Mother Val was a strong woman with tremendous faith and perseverance. She embraced the challenges and responsibilities of raising her five children herself following the death of her beloved husband Mike, who died suddenly in 1983. She loved her family, her friends, her Catholic religion and playing board games with her family. She enjoyed having fun, laughing and joking around with those she loved. She was highly proficient at Scrabble. She kept up to date on current, worldly events. She also enjoyed playing games of chance on her iPad, and especially “taking rides” to various casinos.
She was a strong woman who never complained and made the best of challenging circumstances throughout her life. Family was an important priority in her life that she taught her children in values and traditions, especially her favorite holiday, Christmas. She enjoyed decorating, baking, cooking and sharing the traditional Christmas Eve Slovak Vilija supper. She reinforced these values by reminding all of us of the importance of always saying the following three words, “I Love You.”

Carole Steimer Pastrick, 91, of Duquesne, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, at home, after a wonderful life filled with love for family, friends, and adventures. An excellent seamstress, Carole designed and created many bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns, and prom dresses; contributed to the costumes of the Junior Tamburitzans of Duquesne and the PIFAI Tamburitzans of Pittsburgh; and created outfits for the Pirate Parrot in the mid-1980s. A member of St. Joseph Church in Duquesne, she was a longtime member of its choir, member of the Christian Mothers, past president of the Easter Seals Auxiliary, and a former employee of JoAnn Fabrics.
In her later years, Carole enjoyed traveling with family and friends including several trips to Alaska and Europe, but her favorite place would always be Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. She especially enjoyed time there beginning in 1939 with her Mum and Dad, brothers, sister, cousins, and friends, and later with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
A daughter of the late Edward and Mary Weber Steimer, she was born March 28, 1931, in Duquesne. Wife of the late Albert F. Pastrick who died in 2008, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward (Ted) Pastrick in 1997. She is survived by children, Jennifer Pastrick of Confluence, Merle Pastrick Linn of West Mifflin, Jason Pastrick of Boulder, CO, Alison (Al) Pastrick Marschke of Franklin Park, and Kirsten A. (Tom Funk) Pastrick, Shannon L. Pastrick and Eric D. Pastrick of Duquesne; grandchildren, Abigail (Jason) Linn Evey, Eric P. (Tiffany) Linn Jr., Brian E. (Jamie) Linn, and Caroline Marschke; five great grandchildren; sister, Mary Steimer Dale of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Jean Steimer of Ligonier; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward Jr., Joseph (Esther), Merl (Pola), Glenn (Reath), Jean (Joan), Orvis, Paul (Marcie) and Felix.

Faith Marie Fenk, age 52, of Duquesne, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2022, at home. Born in Germany on October 25, 1969, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Fenk and Anna Marie Skovran. Faith was a Christian and enjoyed spending time with her family, playing video games and doing puzzles. She is the life partner of Joseph Sheehan Sr.; mother of Joseph Sheehan Jr. of Duquesne, Matthew Sheehan Sr. of Duquesne, Reva Sheehan of Duquesne and the late Christopher Sheehan; grandmother of Matthew Sheehan Jr.; sister of Deric (Clara) Fenk of East Liberty; step daughter of Sherry (Mark) Eggers Fenk of Pittsburgh; half sister of Lauren (Mark) Sheehan of Mt. Oliver and Lacey Fenk of Mt. Oliver; best friend of over 30 years to Roxanne (Melvin Folks) Charles of Duquesne; niece of Mike (Tess) Skovran, Joyce Sovran, John (Karen) Skovran, Cheryl (Joseph) Yusavage, and Elizabeth Skovran; and is also survived by goddaughter, Diamond Charles.
