Dorothy M. (Traud) (Jugan) Macioce, age 85, of Munhall, formerly of West Mifflin, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at home, in the presence of her family. She was born in West Mifflin on March 7, 1937 to the late Joseph and Mercedes Traud.  Dorothy will be greatly missed but never forgotten. A member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, St. Therese Church, she was also an avid Steelers fan and her hobbies included crocheting, diamond art, bingo, gambling and card playing. She was a member of the I.S.D.A. and A.A.R.P. and made blankets and scarves for the veterans. Dorothy is survived by her devoted daughter, Sandy (Ken) Kracinovsky of Bethel Park and sons, Paul (Cindy) Jugan of Eagle River, Alaska and Vince Macioce of Pittsburgh. She will be welcomed by her loving daughters, Sharon Jugan, who passed away on March 1, 2019 and Michele, who passed on March 30, 2010. She is the grandmother of of Jim (Melissa) Heckert, Jason Heckert, Sami (Toby) Decker, Matthew (Jessica) Jugan, Nicole Baldwin and Jordan Macioce; great grandmother of Aubrie Heckert, Mason Decker and Lucas Heckert; and sister of the late Bernard (late Joy) Traud. Born in Pittsburgh on December 26, 1979, she was the daughter of Eugene “Geno” Chamboredon Sr. of Munhall and Elizabeth A “Betty” (Hilley) Chamboredon of West Mifflin. Valeria E. (Miklos) Mattis, affectionately known to many as “Mother Val,” died on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Jefferson Hospital, surrounded by her children, at the age of 83. Born in Duquesne, PA on April 2, 1939, she was the youngest of twelve children to Andrew and Helen (Kushnir) Miklos. She married the late Michael T. Mattis on August 29, 1964. She is survived by son Michael (Amy) of White Oak, daughter Monica, with whom she resided, of McKeesport, son William (Tina) of West Mifflin and son Christopher (Paul-James Cukanna) of Churchill; grandsons Michael (Kayla), Ryan, Nicholas, and Jonathan; great grandson Michael John; sister Charlotte (Donald) Nasta of Levittown, PA; in-laws Joseph and Barbara Mattis of Finleyville, PA; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

 She was preceded in death by her daughter, Theresa Mattis (August, 2022), her husband and parents, her parents-in-law Michael and Anna (Hlad) Mattis, and siblings, Helen Miklos, Elizabeth Miklos, Margaret Miklos, Alexander Miklos, Andrew “Timmy” Miklos, Bernard Miklos, Virginia Miklos, Gertrude Motel, Rosalia Miklos and Philomena Demeter.

 A 1957 graduate of Duquesne High School, Valeria worked as a Tele-Typist at Fisher Scientific and later as an Administrative Assistant in the Housing Office at Carnegie Mellon University. 

 Mother Val was a strong woman with tremendous faith and perseverance. She embraced the challenges and responsibilities of raising her five children herself following the death of her beloved husband Mike, who died suddenly in 1983. She loved her family, her friends, her Catholic religion and playing board games with her family. She enjoyed having fun, laughing and joking around with those she loved. She was highly proficient at Scrabble. She kept up to date on current, worldly events. She also enjoyed playing games of chance on her iPad, and especially “taking rides” to various casinos.

 She was a strong woman who never complained and made the best of challenging circumstances throughout her life. Family was an important priority in her life that she taught her children in values and traditions, especially her favorite holiday, Christmas. She enjoyed decorating, baking, cooking and sharing the traditional Christmas Eve Slovak Vilija supper. She reinforced these values by reminding all of us of the importance of always saying the following three words, “I Love You.”

Carole Steimer Pastrick

Carole Steimer Pastrick, 91, of Duquesne, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, at home, after a wonderful life filled with love for family, friends, and adventures. An excellent seamstress, Carole designed and created many bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns, and prom dresses; contributed to the costumes of the Junior Tamburitzans of Duquesne and the PIFAI Tamburitzans of Pittsburgh; and created outfits for the Pirate Parrot in the mid-1980s. A member of St. Joseph Church in Duquesne, she was a longtime member of its choir, member of the Christian Mothers, past president of the Easter Seals Auxiliary, and a former employee of JoAnn Fabrics.

In her later years, Carole enjoyed traveling with family and friends including several trips to Alaska and Europe, but her favorite place would always be Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. She especially enjoyed time there beginning in 1939 with her Mum and Dad, brothers, sister, cousins, and friends, and later with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A daughter of the late Edward and Mary Weber Steimer, she was born March 28, 1931, in Duquesne. Wife of the late Albert F. Pastrick who died in 2008, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward (Ted) Pastrick in 1997. She is survived by children, Jennifer Pastrick of Confluence, Merle Pastrick Linn of West Mifflin, Jason Pastrick of Boulder, CO, Alison (Al) Pastrick Marschke of Franklin Park, and Kirsten A. (Tom Funk) Pastrick, Shannon L. Pastrick and Eric D. Pastrick of Duquesne; grandchildren, Abigail (Jason) Linn Evey, Eric P. (Tiffany) Linn Jr., Brian E. (Jamie) Linn, and Caroline Marschke; five great grandchildren; sister, Mary Steimer Dale of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Jean Steimer of Ligonier; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward Jr., Joseph (Esther), Merl (Pola), Glenn (Reath), Jean (Joan), Orvis, Paul (Marcie) and Felix. 

Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Maloy-Schleifer Funeral Home, Inc., 915 Kennedy Avenue in Duquesne, 412-466-3300. A blessing service there on Friday at 11:30 a.m. will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Joseph Church in Duquesne with the Rev. John McKenna as celebrant. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the former United Cerebral Palsy Foundation now known as CLASS (Community Living and Support Services), 1400 South Braddock Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218.

Richard T. “Chicken” Prakop, age 84, of Duquesne, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022, at home. Born in Duquesne on August 29, 1938, he was the son of the late John and Barbara (Bornyik) Prakop. He was a retired machinist from Mesta Machine, a member of the Pine Run Boat Club, and a member of the Croatian Club of Duquesne. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Steven (Rita) Babyak of Forest Hills, Jerry (Kathleen) Babyak of Acme, PA, Les (Donna) Babyak of Shaler Twp., and Bonnie (Carl) Begovich of Florida. He is also survived by many great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Marion (Frank) Clark, William (Agnes) Prakop, Emma (Stephen) Babyak, Irene (Edward “Rusty”) Wilmans and John (Louise) Prakop. Faith was a Christian and enjoyed spending time with her family, playing video games and doing puzzles. She is the life partner of Joseph Sheehan Sr.; mother of Joseph Sheehan Jr. of Duquesne, Matthew Sheehan Sr. of Duquesne, Reva Sheehan of Duquesne and the late Christopher Sheehan; grandmother of Matthew Sheehan Jr.; sister of Deric (Clara) Fenk of East Liberty; step daughter of Sherry (Mark) Eggers Fenk of Pittsburgh; half sister of Lauren (Mark) Sheehan of Mt. Oliver and Lacey Fenk of Mt. Oliver; best friend of over 30 years to Roxanne (Melvin Folks) Charles of Duquesne; niece of Mike (Tess) Skovran, Joyce Sovran, John (Karen) Skovran, Cheryl (Joseph) Yusavage, and Elizabeth Skovran; and is also survived by goddaughter, Diamond Charles. Henry Vincent McKay, Jr.

Henry Vincent McKay, Jr, 81, died surrounded by family, at home in Duquesne, PA, in the evening of September 17, 2022. He will be remembered for his rowdy sense of humor, his stubborn nature, and his generosity. With his white beard, red cheeks, jolly laughter, and giving spirit, he was often (fairly) mistaken for Santa Claus. He always gave selflessly and unconditionally of his company, his not-so-secret stash of sweets, and his lottery tickets.

Henry was born to Rose Marie Gregg and Henry Vincent McKay, Sr. on May 10, 1941. He grew up in Highland Grove, McKeesport, with his sisters Rosemary and Catherine, where he graduated from McKeesport Vocational High in 1959. He married Josephine Pellegrino on October 7, 1961. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Amphion from 1961-1963, then worked at GC Murphy in McKeesport, USS Duquesne Works, and Alling & Cory in Pittsburgh’s Northside. In retirement, he traveled with Josie to inspect slot machines in Biloxi and Las Vegas and quality checked scratch-offs when he was home. In 1997, he traded his winnings for a woodland cottage, which he named the Super 7 Lodge and his family affectionately called Pap-Pap’s camp, in Kellettville, PA, where he loved hunting, fishing, boating, watching hunting/fishing/boating on TV, collecting turkey-themed decor, and cooking with copious amounts of bacon and cheese. Pap-Pap’s camp was always a party full of family, friends, board games, zip lines, trips to the crick and the rodeo, whiskey and s’mores around the campfire, and “Pap-Pap eggs” (seasoned with Velveeta and black pepper in a cast iron skillet) in the morning. Whether he was at home in Duquesne/West Mifflin, or at camp in Kellettville, Henry enjoyed hanging out at the local watering hole, where he was a beloved fixture on the bar and had many friends.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Josephine Pellegrino; sister Catherine Macey (Robert); daughters Lori McKay Schricker (Don Kapolka), Michele Sparks (Steven), Maureen Marchewka (Walter), and Melissa Vautier (Brian); grandchildren Lauren McKay-Wechter (Adam), Lindsay Schricker (Connor Davenport), Alexis Schricker, Christian Sparks, Gabriella Vautier, Charlotte Sparks, Madeline Vautier, and Brady Vautier; and former son-in-law Scott Schricker. Preceded in death by his sister, RoseMary Geronditis. He had many dear friends, including his friend of over 50 years, Harvey Wilner, and all the regulars of Harvey Wilner’s Village Tavern. Special thanks to the compassionate care of Dr. James Rossetti and his staff at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. The world may have lost an incredible man, but Henry’s spirit lives on in each of these lives that he touched.

Joseph D. Valente, age 81, of New Eagle, formerly of Deep Creek, MD, Duquesne, and Munhall, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at home. Son of the late Daniel and Helen Valente, he was born in Homestead, on June 10, 1941. He was a retired Union Carpenter, a classic car enthusiast, an accomplished bowler with a 300 game, and a card player. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was the husband of the late Mary Karen (Weber) Valente. He is survived by his dogs, Sophie and Sadie; brothers and sisters-in law, Allan J. George F. Dirani, age 80, of Lower Burrell, passed away on June 23, 2022, at UPMC East. Born in Lebanon on February 28, 1942, he was the son of the late Fouad and Almasa Dirani. His family was very important to him and he was very proud of them. He was a loving and generous father and he could be very stubborn. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, and watching them grow, and woodworking. He also loved watching his grandchildren grow. He is in a better place and is reunited with his loving family members who preceded him. George is the husband of Juliette (Sassine) Dirani; father of Riad (Deborah) Dirani of Philadelphia, Aleen (husband, Justin Moser) Dirani of White Oak, and Rami (Helene) Dirani of Philadelphia; 8 grandchildren; brother of Mona, Michele Dirani, Milad Dirani, Georgette (Kahalim) Zhakem, and late Elias Dirani and late Al (late Donna) Dirani. Victor M. Zilinskas, age 89, of North Huntingdon, formerly of West Mifflin, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at his home. Born in Homestead on March 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Victor and Anne (DeVilla) Zilinskas Sr. He was a retired pattern maker at Fisher Body and a member of the Pattern Makers Union. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, North Huntingdon, Pido’s Friday Night Bowling League, Pinheads Bowling League and the First Catholic Slovak Union. He was an avid golfer, loved to fix things, do puzzles and work on cars and other racing cars and loved to attend his grandchildren’s sports and school activities. Victor is the beloved husband of Mary Ann (Novotny) Zilinskas for 65 years; father and hero to Victor John (Rosalinda) Zilinskas of Palo Alto, CA, Susan Zilinskas of North Huntingdon and Melissa Ann (Mark Allen) Prutz of North Huntingdon; grandfather of Victor Q., Owen Marek, Braydon Nicholas and Mila Ann; brother of Mark (late Janice) Zilinskas of Monroeville and late John (late Jean) Zilinskas. He was a retired carpenter from Boyer & Pentek in McKeesport, was a graduate of West Mifflin North High School Class of 1972 and was looking forward to his 50 year reunion. His hobby was woodworking. Elvira E. Vickovic, age 99, of Dravosburg, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022, at UPMC McKeesport. Daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Kasunic, she was born in Lysing #3 in Connellsville, PA, on October 20, 1922. She was a custodian at Duquesne High School and a cook at the Croatian Club in Duquesne. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Name Church. She liked to hook rugs, sew, crochet and had traveled around the world. Elvira was the wife of the late Adam Joseph “Specks” Vickovic; mother of Edward J. Vickovic of Dravosburg, Joanne Vickovic of Duquesne, Judith Ann (Allan) Nagel of The Villages, FL, Marie (late James) Ford of West Mifflin, Thomas Vickovic of McKeesport and late Anthony Vickovic; 8 Grandchildren; 2 Great Grandchildren. Born in Pittsburgh on January 27, 1955, she was the daughter of the late Stan and Betty (Harper) Whited. She was the assistant manager at the Dollar General in West Mifflin. She was a Born Again Christian, she loved her grandchildren and trips to the casino with her late husband, Don, and her sister-in-law, Judy. Pat was the wife of the late Don Luczak; mother of Georgy (Christy) Hunt Jr. of Baldwin, Tony (Rachel) Hunt of Plum Boro, Tracy (Gary Beayrd) Hunt of Glassport, Bobby (Katy) Hunt of Scottdale, PA and her other son, Big Mike; grandmother of Sarah Ashley, Zachariah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Raymond, Ruben, Angel, Caiden & Landon Hunt; sister of Stan (Vicki) Whited of Canonsburg and the late Donna (husband Harry survives) Sye. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Thomas B. Huwalt Jr., age 75, of West Mifflin, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at his daughter’s home. Born in Duquesne on March 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Thomas B. Huwalt Sr. and late Helen (Smocer) Huwalt. He was a former welder with U.S. Steel-Duquesne Works for 19 years, a retired Stationary Engineer for Allegheny County at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport and a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Trinity Church. He was a master of tinkering, loved fishing, trap shooting and camping in Erie. He proudly served his country in the Marine Corps. during the Vietnam War. Thomas is the beloved husband of 53 years to Georgean (Perhac) Huwalt; father of Scott (Erin) Huwalt of South Park and Amy (late Edward) Wilson of Port Vue; grandfather of Maura, Zachary, and Daniel Huwalt, Ayla and Avery Wilson and preceded in death by grandson Joshua Huwalt; brother of Gary Huwalt of White Oak; uncle of Eric Huwalt, Melissa Hathaway and Ashley May. He is also survived by a great niece and several great nephews and his mother-in-law Pauline (late John) Perhac. There will be No Visitation. Service will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies followed by Military Honors. Brian Keith Michaels, age 61, of Washington, PA, formerly of Duquesne, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022. Born in McKeesport on September 25, 1960, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph E. Michaels PhD and late Mary Ann (Sabol) Michaels. He was a former oil fields rig operator and proudly served his country in the Marine Corps. He is the husband of Charleen McDonald; brother of Tyrone (Sara) Michaels of Baldwin, Allison (Jamie) Parker of Charlotte, NC, and Joseph B. (Heather) Michaels of Munhall; and is also survived by nieces and nephews. There is No Visitation.
