Arnold A. Mathe, age 89, of West Mifflin, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023, at UPMC McKeesport. Son of the late Alexander and Irene (Salko) Mathe, he was born in McKeesport on May 3, 1933. He was a retired food broker and salesman and a graduate of Dale Carnegie Sales School. He was a member of St. John Mark Lutheran Church, Homestead, where he served on Council, was a Lector and Usher. He was a Past Master of McKeesport Lodge F&AM #375, a member of F&AM #731 and was involved in youth basketball for the West Mifflin Recreation League. His grandchildren were his life and his great grandchildren were very special to him. He proudly served his Country in the Army during the Korean War. Arnold is the loving husband of 68 years to Jeannette (Miskanic) Mathe; father of Terry Naylor of West Mifflin and Tammy O’Brien of Munhall; grandfather of Christopher Naylor, Zachary (Tosha) Naylor, Dr. Taylor O’Brien and Blake O’Brien; great grandfather of Alexander Naylor, Garrett Naylor and Ava Naylor; and brother of late Thomas Mathe and late Dennis (surviving spouse Joy) Mathe. Pamela J. Markovich, age 67, of Elizabeth Twp., passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at UPMC McKeesport. Born in Homestead on April 27, 1955, she is the daughter of Eleanor (Spanitz) Duche of West Mifflin and the late Leonard Evagues Sr. She was a former employee of U.S. Steel and a real estate agent. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Name Church. Pam was a loyal Steeler fan, calling herself a “Steelerette.” She was also good at art and poetry. She is the mother of Mylo (Sharon) Markovich of Greensburg, Samantha Markovich of Elizabeth and the late Clint Foley; grandmother of Lily Coffey, Ella Coffey, Ben Markovich, Brian Markovich, and Mylo Markovich; sister of Leonard (Joanne) Evagues Jr. of Duquesne, Michaeleene (late Anthony “Carly”) Giannandrea of West Mifflin,Alicia (Brian) Ziemke of Elizabeth Twp., and late Edward Evagues; and boyfriend Val Kruska of Elizabeth Twp. Renee was the wife of the late David J. Fontanese for 37 years; mother of David J. John A. Hoblak, age 87, of West Mifflin, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, at Concordia of Monroeville. Born in Duquesne on February 21, 1936, he was the son of the late John and Julia (Chobirko) Hoblak. He was retired from Tygart & Co as a welding and crane operator. After retirement, he worked at Gander Mountain for 17 years. John was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Forest Hills, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was the loving husband of 59 years to the late Karen M. (Deets) Hoblak, who died on December 6, 2017. Michael A. Opalko, age 67, of West Mifflin, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh. Born in McKeesport on January 14, 1956, he is the son of Albert “Junior” and Patricia (Spanitz) Opalko of North Huntingdon. Michael graduated from Norwin Highschool in 1973, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, National Forensic League, ski club and other various activities. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, who was stationed in Germany, earning his parachutist “jump wings” and participated in the Army’s boxing programs. He was a US Postal worker, known fondly by everyone as “Mike the Mailman.” A long-time learner with time spent at St. Vincent College and Community College of Allegheny County, a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from Penn State University, and continuing education certificates from Villanova University. He was a member of Bible Baptist Temple in Clairton, PA. Michael loved socializing, making friends with people from all walks of life. He was an eccentric, free spirit who had a presence as soon as he walked in the room and was happy to share his faith in Christ. Some favorite activities he is remembered by playing guitar, playing chess, swimming, music from the 60’s & 70’s, cooking (especially making his grandmother’s strudel), working on home projects, gardening, reading, and writing. He loved his close and extended family, and if you were a friend, he considered you family. If you were family, he was in your corner, and he was a good guy to have in your corner. He will be deeply missed by many. He worked at Westinghouse in maintenance, where he served as a steward, and then at Electric Motor Services in Finleyville as a motor repairman. Jane E. Steiner, age 76, of West Mifflin, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at home. Born in McKeesport on June 1, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Doris Jean (Davis) Sklencar. She was a retired art teacher for the McKeesport Area School District, a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Trinity Church and was a docent at the Frick Museum. She enjoyed the arts, her cats, spending quality time with people, going shopping with and spoiling her grandchildren, taking friends to lunch and hosting numerous parties at her home. Vincent J. “Jimmy” Marino, age 81, passed away peacefully, at his home in New Port Richey, FL, on January 15, 2023. He was born on September 10, 1941, in Duquesne, PA, son of the late Vincent and Mary Marino. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Vince was the life of a party and made everyone laugh. He enjoyed Christmas time, cooking lots of food, and spending time with his family. Vince cherished his little dog, Misty (foo-foo). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Truxal.
