James A. Dunn, 84, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, February 28, 2020 at Forbes Hospital. He was born July 21, 1935 in Rillton, Pa., a son of the late William and Tibetha Johns Dunn. James was a member of St. Agnes Church, North Huntingdon. He loved telling stories about his past. He loved working outside and gardening. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the love of his life. he was retired from the trucking industry, a member of the American Legion and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served four years. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul, Daniel, Bill, Doris, Margaret, Gladys, and John. NFL and collegiate football coach Daniel L. Radakovich, known as “Bad Rad,” passed away at his home on February 20, 2020.
Radakovich was born on November 27, 1935 to Michael and Bridget Radakovich of Duquesne.
Radakovich grew up alongside the roller coasters and barker’s tents of Kennywood amusement park. He frequently shared tales of the famous circus acts and entertainers that stayed in his parents’ home, including the Flying Wallendas and Gene Kelly.
Stories were a hallmark of Radakovich’s existence. He was a legendary storyteller and was himself the subject of many humorous, surprising, and even outrageous anecdotes told by others!
He authored a memoir on his life in football, Bad Rad Football Nomad, that includes a number of these stories as well as an accounting of his many innovations in the sports field. Radakovich loved the game of football but also golf, basketball, history, travel, old movies, music, and most of all, his family and his friends.

George “Judy” Belancik, 91, was born April 15, 1928 in Duquesne. He was the son of the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Sabol) Belancik. Beloved husband of the late Violet (Obradovich). He is survived by his loving children Michael “Sonny” Galagaza of Redondo Beach, Mary Simon of West Mifflin, George “Guj” Belancik of Hermosa Beach, Debbie (Jim) Driscoll of West Mifflin, and Richard “Blee” (Doreen) Belancik of West Mifflin. He was affectionately known as Pappy to Lisa Simon, Michael Galagaza, Anthony (Claudia) Galagaza, Melissa (Marty) Clark, Steve (Sharon) Driscoll, Erin (Sean) Welsh, Cory Desmond, Richie (Rachel) Belancik, Jared (Erica) Crevar. GP (Great Grandpap) to Sarah and Luke Galagaza, Violet Clark, Ava and Ryan Driscoll, Stephen, Quinn and Cruz Welsh, Rylee and Troy Belancik, and Miah Crevar. Also survived by sister-in-law Dolly Skorich and many nieces and nephews. Shirley Mae Cleveland-Montgomery, 84, died Feb. 14, 2020 in McKeesport. She was born Dec. 24, 1935, in Pittsburgh to Katherine Cleveland (Herrer) and Odell Cleveland. She spent her childhood years growing up on Hosier Street in Homestead as well as on the family farm in Homeville with her brothers Odell & Calvin Cleveland.
She always talked about her family horse “Harry”. Harry was in charge of farm chores as well as giving the children rides around the farm. She also had a pet pig but learned quickly that pigs are not pets. Thanksgiving that year was a sad affair.
Through the years, she resided in several places Chicago, IL., Homewood, PA, East Liberty, PA, but returned to Homestead, PA. She worked several manufacturing jobs while in Chicago before returning to Homestead to help her brother Calvin run the family-owned bar, “Cleveland Grill.”

She was born May 21, 1927 in Pittsburgh and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marion (Book) Connolly Gloria, whom many knew as Katie was preceded in death by her first Husband, Alvin L. Hand, who was a fighter pilot in World War, II. She met Al shortly after the War and married him. They were married for 28 years when Al succumbed to heart disease in 1975. She then married Eugene "Gene" Reichenfeld, a noted musician and symphony conductor in the Pittsburgh area. She was married to Gene for 34 years before he passed away in 2016. Mom was a lover of the symphony, classical music and received great joy in reading and going to restaurants. Throughout her life, her primary focus was and always had been her family. Her happiest moments were at family gatherings where she interacted with three generations. She was unique in her ability to interact with her contemporaries as well as her Great Grandchildren. She had the special ability to connect with people right away. Her greatest qualities were her abilities to be compassionate, loving and nurturing of her friends and family. She was also predeceased by her eldest son, Keith, who died in a mountain climbing accident on Mt. Huascaran in South America in 1978.

Irene T. Kovalyak age 92, of West Mifflin died Friday, February 14, 2020 surrounded by her loving family and caregiver. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 8 years, Mitchell Galiyas, and her second husband of 58 years George S. Kovalyak. Born September 27, 1927 in New Alexandria, PA, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Irene (Kertes) Iski. Irene is survived by her sons Mitch (Mary Jo) Galiyas of Kennedy Township, and George Kovalyak of West Mifflin and daughter Terri Michell (Kovalyak) of Bethel Park. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren Juliana (Mike) Carr of Robinson Township, Nathan (Amanda) Galiyas of Robinson Township, Father Zachary Galiyas of Kennedy Township, Moira (Mark) Cheeseman of Robinson Township, Kody Kovalyak of West Mifflin, and Lauren Michell of Bethel Park. Irene was a lifelong domestic engineer who enjoyed cooking, baking and cleaning. One of her favorite things to do was having family get togethers surrounded by the people she loved the most. She was also a proud lifelong and cherished member of the Dravosburg United Methodist Church. He served as McKeesport City Controller, City Clerk of Council, and Chairman of the McKeesport Republican Committee. When he was in his 60’s, he retired as a Workman’s Compensation Representative for the Department of Labor and Industry where he helped retirees with benefits.

Eileen M. Vlasick, 90, of North Huntingdon, passed unexpectedly on Sunday, February 9, 2020. She was born January 3, 1930 in Wyano, a daughter of the late John and Stella (Popek) Oberc. Eileen was a founding member of St. Agnes Church, member of Christian Mothers and helped with the church bazaar. She worked throughout the Norwin School District for 13 years in food services and retired in 1992. She was very active in Boy Scouts, Norwin Band Aides, AARP Chapter #3221 and enjoyed gardening, baking and loved to travel with her husband, Tom, visiting all 50 states. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas J. Vlasick; two sisters, Carol and Louise. She was the beloved mother of two sons, Thomas Jr. and Paul; two daughters, Mary Catherine Mathis and her husband, Richard "Buddy", and Eileen A. Vlasick; grandchildren, Amy (Steve) Weyant, Steven (Brittany) Mathis; great-grandchildren, Scarlett Mathis and baby Weyant. Barbara Volas, age 84, of White Oak, passed away on February 3, 2020 surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness. She was born on March 3, 1935 in Kremasti, Rhodes, Greece and is the daughter of the late Peter J. and Katerina Cantemiry Volas.
Barbara graduated from McKeesport High School in 1952. She attended Pratt Institute in New York. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1963 and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967. Barbara lived the artist’s life. She held adjunct professor appointments at Western College for Women, now Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio and Carnegie Mellon University. She exhibited her work at individual, group and invitational shows throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Several of her paintings and prints are part of individual and corporate collections. Barbara earned awards and commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts and Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. Barbara will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews when they would visit her home, garden and studios.

LaNora Louise (Rouse) Price passed away peacefully on February 1, 2020, at her home in North Versailles after a long illness. Born July 19, 1933, in Pittsburgh to John and Margaret Rouse, LaNora grew up on the Northside, graduating from Allegheny High School in 1951. In September of that year, she married Donald Price, a marriage that lasted until his death in 2008.
LaNora worked as an operator for Bell Telephone and as a meat cutter for Kroger’s in Duquesne but retired in 1972 to be a stay-at-home mother to her daughter Dawn.
After Donald’s retirement, he and LaNora traveled extensively, visiting England, Scotland, Wales, and Italy, and finally taking their dream vacation to Egypt.

Charles “Chick” W. Schwer Jr., age 72, of North Versailles, passed away February 2, 2020. He was born April 22, 1947 in Charleroi, a son of the late Charles (Genevieve) Schwer Sr.
He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Wilmerding and owned many business in the past including the North Versailles Nursery.
He is survived by his wife of over 54 years Diane Schwer; sons Charles (Cheryl) Schwer III of Westmoreland City and Thomas (Cyndi) Schwer of East McKeesport; grandchildren Nina, Charles, Jacob and Maxwell Schwer; his father in law Daniel Santimauro; brothers Jack (Barbara) Schwer, Timothy Schwer and Patrick (Kathleen) Schwer; brother in law Daniel (Sandra) Santimauro; and nieces and nephews.

He was born October 8, 1959 in McKeesport and was the son of Jane (White) Stevanus of Elizabeth Township and the late George Emmett Stevanus. Roy was a member of the Boston United Methodist Church, WMBU of Blythdale and was a social member of the Buena Vista Fire Co. He worked for Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

Cameron P. Hopkin, 19, of Ruffs Dale, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 2, 2020. He was born December 6, 2000 in Monroeville, the son of Victor and Jamie (Ruggier) Hopkin of Ruffs Dale. He was a 2019 graduate of Yough High School where he was a member of the football team, wrestling team, National Honors Society and many other clubs. He attended Kent State University Honors College where he was a member of the Honors Leadership Academy. He was a chemistry major and had plans to use his education to positively impact as many lives as possible. Cameron was a kind, generous, gentle soul. He loved his family, his friends and great music. He touched the lives of all who knew him and will be forever missed. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother Wade and sister Carli Hopkin of Wexford, grandmother, Shelley Ruggier of Elizabeth Township, uncles, Wendell C. (Danette) Hopkin of Chesapeake, VA, Louis (Marcy) Hopkin of Elizabeth Township, and Jason (Heather) Ruggier of Cranberry Township, aunts, Melanie Ruggier of Elizabeth Township and Samantha (Dan) Taylor of Buena Vista, cousins, Ryan (Katie), Amanda (Chris), Jackie, Travis, Robyn, Matt, Lauren, Jacob, Max, Zach, Logan, and Chiara. After a wonderful life spent with loving family and friends, Frances Ekl, 80, passed from this earth on Sunday, February 2, 2020, to spend eternity in the loving care of the Lord in heaven.
Born Frances Mae Bugajski on April 20, 1939 to the late Frank and Alice Jean Bugajski, she lived her entire life in Western Pennsylvania. She was married to Joseph John Ekl for nearly 60 years.
Frances graduated from Norwin High School and Westmoreland County Community College. As president of the Norwin School board for many years, she led numerous valuable programs, her favorites being the set-up of Phone-a-Friend for children and the institution of the annual senior citizen dinner now run by the NHS student council. She was a faithful member of St. Agnes Church, Christian Mothers, the GMC Motorhome Club, the International Family Motorcoach Club, and the Norwin High class reunion committee. Reading and traveling were two of her many passions. Taking Polish lessons with her father to better share their heritage was enlightening for both. With friends and relatives she traveled locally, nationally and abroad. She played cards regularly with friends in various card clubs. With her husband, cousins, and close friends, she shared delight and excitement when visiting various casinos.
In addition to her parents, Frances was predeceased by her husband Joe (Jack) Ekl, her sister Marilyn Nagel and her brother James Bugajski.
Frances is survived by children Debra Popelas (Kenneth), Joseph Ekl (Victoria), Randy Ekl (Maxine), Robert Ekl (Donna); grandchildren Timothy Ekl (Catherine Owen), Brian Popelas, Adam Ekl, Spencer Ekl, Laura Ekl, Emily Ekl, Keith Ekl, Justin Ekl; siblings Delores Jean Pedder, Frank Bugajski; sister-in-law Kathy Bugajski; many nieces, nephews, cousins.
Visitation is scheduled Thursday, February 6th, 6 to 8 pm, Friday, February 7th, 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at James Shirley Funeral Home, North Huntingdon, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial will take place in St. Agnes Church on Saturday, February 8th at 10 am with interment at Penn Lincoln Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Norwin Public Library or the benefit of the senior citizen dinner. Envelopes will be available during visitations.

Olive "Ollie" Jane Swackhammer, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2020. She was born May 7, 1938 to James and Viola Patterson in Pittsburgh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Swackhammer; brothers, Donald, John, Edward, Thomas; and sisters, Dorothy Mesko and Irene Lewis. Robert Michael Saunders, 67, died January 29, 2020 at home in McKeesport, Pa. Known affectionately as “Banjo,” he was born December 23, 1952 in Homestead, Pa.
He was the son of Taft Saunders and Elizabeth Krista and the third of five children. He was educated in the Homestead Public School System. As a young adult, Banjo would go on to work side jobs such as roofing and other small hands-on jobs. He also enjoyed acting. On April 2, 2002, Banjo married Mathilda Jones of Homestead.
Along with his brother Richard (Rick), he was seen in the movie “Dawn of the Dead,” where he would play a major role as a zombie.
A drummer who loved heavy metal rock, Banjo and his brother Rick joined several bands and performed at many shows and local venues, and was a devoted fan of pro wrestling.
