Sister M. Anne Angelcyk, SDR
“My lover speaks; he says to me, “Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one and come!” Song of Songs 2:10
In the afternoon of Friday, May 23, 2025—on what began as an “ordinary” day—our Divine Redeemer came to gently bring Sister Anne to her heavenly home. She was 84 years old and a Sister of the Divine Redeemer for 65 years. As vibrant and productive as Sister Anne’s life had been, her last years were marked by a slow physical decline from Parkinson’s disease. By God’s loving Providence, that very morning our chaplain, Father Edwin Wichman, anointed Sister.
When it appeared that Sister was dying, the Sisters, several of her nurses and close friends, gathered in her Infirmary bedroom to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet, the Rosary, special prayers for the dying...and sing hymns to Jesus and the Blessed Mother. Sister was also being prayed for by others beyond the Motherhouse: family, friends, “The Rock of the Redeemer”…
Sr. Anne, the daughter of Anna (Booley) and Edward Walter Angelcyk, was born November 26, 1940 in West Newton, PA, and baptized at Holy Family Church. She had one brother and two sisters.
While browsing through a friend’s Divine Redeemer Academy yearbook, the then Kathleen, liked what she saw and decided to attend the Academy. Then, in February of her senior year, she entered the Community as a postulant. Her First Profession of Vows was on August 15, 1960, and her Final Profession was in 1965.
Sr. Anne received a Bachelor of Science degree from Duquesne University, majoring in education and minoring in business education. She then received a Master of Arts degree in business education from the Catholic University of America.
Sister taught at St. Bartholomew in Penn Hills; the former Bishop Boyle High School in Homestead; Sacred Heart High School in E. Liberty; Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport; and Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, Ohio, Diocese of Cleveland.
Sr. Anne embraced every change of assignment in a spirit of Obedience and trust, and with a positive attitude. One such move was to our hospital in S. St. Paul, Minnesota, where she was the superior of her religious community there and also secretary to the Director of Nursing.
Later, when the need arose, and after receiving certification as a Personal Care Home Administrator in 1989, she was named assistant administrator—and later administrator—of our Villa St. Teresa Assisted Living Home in Darby, near Philadelphia, serving there for 17 years.
Throughout her life, Sr. Anne found effective and practical ways of bringing needed help to others.
For a time, Sister served as a council member for the American Province of the Congregation.
As Sister’s own mother advanced in years and needed help, Sister assumed the responsibility and privilege of caring for her for 9 years—the last 2 years at our Motherhouse.
Inspired by her mother and grandmother, Sr. Anne sewed many quilts, the Amish doing the final quilting stitch. She donated one of her quilts to Holy Family (her home parish) to help with replacing their roof.
A cause dear to Sister’s heart was promoting Vocations to Religious Life and Priesthood—and to our own
Community. She served for several years on the Greensburg Religious Vocation Council. She said, “I love what I am doing. I love being a Sister…I really believe that Religious Life is going to blossom again.”
Early each morning, Sr. Anne could be found praying in the quiet of the Motherhouse chapel where she received the spiritual energy to meet the day ahead.
In her spare time, Sister enjoyed quilting, horseback riding, and gardening.
Sr. Anne is survived by her fellow Sisters of the Divine Redeemer, her sisters Paulette (Gary) Klun and Betsy Fanala. Also, many cousins, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and one great grand niece, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Angelcyk.
