James R. Stricklin, age 83, of Elizabeth Twp., passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Allegheny General Hospital. He retired from the payroll department at U.S. Steel, South Side, and was a former school bus driver for the Elizabeth Forward School District. An Army veteran, he was a member of St. Joachim and Anne Parish, St. Michael Church, in Elizabeth Twp., and a lifetime social member of Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Co. Born February 11, 1938 in Wheeling, WV, he was a son of the late Harry and Roberta (Thomas) Stricklin and husband of the late Bernadette Ann (Chasko) Stricklin. He is survived by daughters, Renee (Robert L.) Gillie of West Newton, Dana Stricklin of Elizabeth and Jill (Ronald) Orosz of Baton Rouge, LA; son, James M. (Lisa) Stricklin of Plum; grandchildren, Dr. Brandon (Theresa), Zachary, Garrett, Aaron, Jacob (Cassandra), Benjamin, Nicholas and Gabrielle; great-grandchildren, Alexander, Claire, Willow and Raylee; brother, Harry Stricklin of Elizabeth Twp.; sister-in-law, Patricia (Duane) Coulson of Elizabeth Twp.; also, nieces and nephews.

Robert A. Waight, 83, of North Huntingdon, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.  He was born September 26, 1937 in Aspinwall, a son of the late Floyd and Margaret (Krieg) Waight.  Prior to his retirement, Robert was an electrical engineer for Westinghouse and a veteran of the US Army Reserves.  He was a member of St. Agnes Parish, enjoyed golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gary and James Waight; and sister, Patty Waight.  He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, JoAnne Wilkinson Waight; sons, Jim and his wife, Ann, Neal and his wife, Julie; daughter, Laura Chomanics and her husband, Mike; grandchildren, LeeAnn (Brandon) Meyer, Christina Waight, Madeline Waight, Dominique (Steven) Gray; great-grandchildren, Vincent, Francis, Lillian, and Cecilia.

Betty Miller Beranek, 89, of North Huntingdon, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg.  She was born September 3, 1931 in Madison, a daughter of the late Paul and Blanche (Eisaman) Miller.  Betty was a registered nurse having graduated from the Westmoreland Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. Because of her great love of books and reading, Betty volunteered at the Norwin Public Library for many years.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert E. Beranek; brothers, Lewis, Earl, Robert D., Willis and Paul Miller; sisters, Irene Weibel, Rosella Shindehite, Helen Connolly, Dorothy McWilliams and Donna Fawcett.  Betty was a member of The Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, N. Huntingdon.  She is survived by two sons, Robert A. Beranek and his wife, Pamela, of North Huntingdon; David E. Beranek and his wife, Christina, of Virginia; daughter, Lynn T. Vita and her husband, Charles, of North Huntingdon; grandchildren, Michael (Elizabeth) and Matthew Vita, Leanndra, Lindsay, Mikayla and Jonathon Beranek; two great-grandchildren, Cayden and Layla Beranek.  Also surviving are two brothers, Thomas and Dean Miller; sister-in-law, Nancy Miller; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was a member of the White Oak American Legion, the 11th Ward Welfare Association and was an avid bowler. Tom served in the US Army.

Daniel Patrick Miller, age 75 of McKeesport, passed away at home on Friday, April 30, 2021.  Born February 26, 1946 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Patrick C. and Alberta (McClure) Miller.  A retired steelworker at US Steel National Tube Works in McKeesport who also was a co-owner of Mr. Chips Cafe in the Pittsburgh Courthouse and served as a pit crew member for Chip Ganassi's Formula 4 racing team.  He was also a US Navy Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War, a member and past commander of the American Legion Post # 577 of McKeesport, a scuba diver, and avid Steelers fan.  Daniel is survived by his sisters Kathleen (Ray) Takacs of North Huntingdon and Patricia (Chuck) Evans of Broken Arrow, OK, his brothers Ken (Patricia) Miller of Lisbon, OH and Thomas (Susan) Miller of Maumee, OH, and also nieces and nephews.

  Mary M. Slafka, 100, a lifelong resident of Glassport, died today, May 2, 2021. She was born Christmas Day, 1920 in Port Vue, daughter of John and Anna (Pallof) Janus. Mary was a 1939 graduate of McKeesport High School. She was a former federal employee who worked as an office administrator at the Christy Park Works during World War II. Mary was a member of Queen of the Rosary parish in Glassport, and for many years a bowler on the Merrymakers at the Glassport Lanes. She was an Avon representative for over 35 years and loved to knit items for her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen W. Slafka in 1987; three sisters, Ann Mick, Margaret Wolman, and Helen Barto; and four brothers, Andrew, Edward, Joseph and John Janus. In addition, she is survived by her loving family of three sons; Stephen M. Slafka and wife, MaryAnn of Liberty Borough, PA, Kenneth E. Slafka and wife, Debra from Great Falls, VA, and Gary T. Slafka and wife, Sandra of Valencia, PA. Mary was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren; Kristi and husband Ryan Brannan of Arlington VA, Kari and husband Shane Cashdollar of Herndon, VA, Matthew Slafka of Kent, WA, Sherri and husband Dan Kohley of Cranberry, PA, and Glenna and husband Tom Hilpisch of McMurray, PA; and eight great-grandchildren, Jax, Max, Penny, Connor, Regan, Mary, Anna, and Thomas. Katherine Kotun, age 92, of McKeesport, died May 1, 2021. She was born in McKeesport on November 19, 1928 and is the daughter of the late Samuel and Theodora Skarpenzou Pandel. She is the wife of the late John J. Kotun who she loved to travel with…there were yearly trips to Geneva on the Lake with the family and close friends. Later she and John enjoyed multiple trips to Las Vegas, Nevada and they also visited numerous states to attend John’s Navy reunions.

Jean L. Zanetti, age 86, of Liberty Borough, died May 1, 2021, at UPMC Mercy Hospital. Born September 6, 1934, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Louis George and Margaret (Fairbaugh) George Konias and the wife of the late Arthur P. Zanetti.
Jean was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a member of the Evangelical Congregational Church in McKeesport. Jean enjoyed playing bingo, cards, going to the casino, and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates play. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
Jean is survived by her children, Ronald (Debbie) of Elizabeth, and Jeri (Rob) Mowry of Liberty Borough; grandchildren, Kristy (Rob) Gordon, Julie Zanetti, Jeffery (Holli) Zanetti, and Kyle (Morgan) Mowry; great-grandchildren, Parker, Lincoln, and Kenzie; and step-sister, Joni Wakefield.

Dr. Janice Skraly, of McKeesport, known by her many students over the years as “Doc”, died peacefully on April 25, 2021. Born on June 22, 1941 in Blue Island, Illinois, she is the daughter of the late Stanley Kuzak and Sophie Szalacha Karnas. The first in her family to attend college, she graduated from Alliance College with her B.S. in chemistry and went on to earn her Ph.D. in education from the University of Pittsburgh. She taught chemistry and computer science at South Allegheny High School for nearly 30 years, and stoking interest in science was her main devotion. She was proud of her students’ excellent performance in science fairs and loved the fact that they would come to her lab in their spare time to work on extra projects like growing crystals. She was all about exploration and discovery; the largest plaque in her office is a quote by Albert Einstein: “If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn’t be called Research.”

Thomas “Tommy” J. Szmuc Jr., age 74, of North Versailles, passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2021. He was born October 26, 1946 in Monongahela, Pa., a son of the late Thomas Sr. and Sara Szmuc. He was a long time member of the Linway United Presbyterian Church in North Versailles. He was a proud Army veteran that served in Vietnam, and then went onto a long career as a truck driver hauling hazardous materials before retiring. He was a member of the Teamsters, American Legion and AmVets.

He enjoyed gambling with Marlene, Wayne and Linda every chance he got. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Patty Harding and Carol Miller.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 54 years Sandi J. Szmuc; daughter Tracey Szmuc of North Versailles; brother Bill (Arlene) Szmuc of North Versailles; sister Sandy (George) Cutson of North Versailles; his loyal companion dogs Dottie and Ginger who never left his side; and his fur grandbaby Minnie Pearl.

]Doris Jean Wergin, 91, of North Huntingdon, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the St. Anne Home, Greensburg. She was born December 1, 1929 in Clairton and was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary (Geci) Kayda. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Wergin who passed away in 2012.

Doris and her husband Bob enjoyed wintering every year in Florida  and coming home to Pennsylvania for their summertime gardening. She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish - St. Angela Church and the former Keener Citizens there. Before becoming a homemaker, Doris worked in the Accounting Dept. of the former US Steel National Tube Works, McKeesport.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Dr. Gregory Bittner of Greensburg, grandson, Dr. Robert Bittner of Somerset, sisters, Joyce Constant and Mary and her husband Ed Jensen of CA, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Suty and Alice Pastore and brothers, Steve and Ernest Kayda.
