James M. “Jim” Surgeon, Jr., 83, of Port Vue, passed away Friday, August 30, 2024 at home. He was born July 12, 1941 in McKeesport and was the son of the late James M. Surgeon, Sr. and the late Elizabeth C. (Duncan) Surgeon. He was the husband of 58 years to the late Carla Sue (Forgie) Surgeon, who passed away February 4, 2019. Jim worked as a steel worker at both US Steel and Copperweld. He was very active as secretary treasurer for the Copperweld Credit Union in Glassport and attended The Port Vue United Methodist Church. He loved vacationing in Rehoboth Beach. Jim was known for his meticulous care of his home, garden and yard and took great pride having his home in pristine condition. He will be greatly missed.

Betty Ann (Law) Thalman, 93, of Elizabeth, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. She was born on August 27, 1931 in Left Hand, West Virginia, and was the daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Vineyard) Law. She was the loving wife of the late August M. Thalman, Jr., who passed away on December 30, 2019. Betty was a loving mother to her children. She continued to nurture and care for her grandchildren and helped to raise them while their parents worked. Betty was also and important partner to her husband, playing a vital role helping him in his ministerial calling. She was the First lady to her husband, August, as he administered the churches he was pastor to. Betty had a love of painting in a ceramics class, which she enjoyed for many years.

Thorvard Reynold Hardimon, 90, of McKeesport, PA departed this life on August 20th, 2024, at home. Thorvard was born April 11, 1934, in Walker County, Texas. He was the beloved son of Joseph Farris and Lula Mae Hardimon.
Thorvard attended Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, Texas where he graduated in 1954. While attending, he played on the football team and helped lead his team to win the state championship.
Shortly after moving to PA, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957, and he was deployed to Germany. During that time, he became ill and was honorably discharged in 1959. When he returned to McKeesport, PA, he married the love of his life, Earlean Bush in 1960. Four children were born from that union, Deborah Celestine, Thorvard Carlos, Cedric Jerome, and Angela Maria.
Deacon Hardimon was a 50+ year member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and was ordained to the Deacon Board in 1974. For 25 years Deacon Hardimon served as the Treasurer of this church and oversaw the financials of this edifice. He retired in 1996 from the Municipal Authority, City of McKeesport, PA, and has enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Deborah Marie Simak, age 71 of North Oakland, Pittsburgh, passed away on July 28, 2024. She was born June 18,1953 in Glassport, Pa. She was preceded in death by parents Richard and Vincentina Simak, brother Ricky Simak, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Simak, Mr. Joseph Como, and memorably Lil Como. She is survived by her beloved son Zachary Holtzman, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Theresa Simak of Jacksonville Florida and their adult children Christina, Elizabeth and Andrew, daughter-in-law Danielle Lewis, many cousins particularly Nancy Como, Patty, Paula and Judy Minydzak, and some very great friends she held close to her heart. She often expressed her gratefulness for the blessings in her life, but her greatest joy were her grandchildren Lilly, Lia and Zack Holtzman with whom she was always so happy and of whom she was always so proud. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with Bachelor and Master degrees in Nursing and ended a successful career as Director of Quality Improvement in the medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. She enjoyed Pittsburgh’s museums, parks and cultural events, especially musicals, classical music, art exhibits, Phipps flower shows, and mystery books; she was a lector at St Paul Cathedral, a kayaker, and a fan of silver sneakers and playing chess, and the #1 supporter of her grand-kids’ athletic and educational endeavors.

Florence M. Shively, age 96, of White Oak, formerly of Liberty Borough, died August 25, 2024, at Riverside Care Center. Born May 18, 1928, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Bales and Flora (McCracken) Marks and the wife of the late Clyde Shively. Florence's life was rich with joy and purpose. Professionally, Florence worked in the banking industry for almost 40 years, for the former Union National Bank. A beloved Church of Life in Christ member, she served as the choir director, and her passion for music shone through her natural soprano voice. She appeared in musical theater as well with the South Allegheny Players and the McKeesport Choraliers. She faithfully supported the McKeesport Tiger football and girls' basketball teams, cheering on the teams with unwavering enthusiasm. In her quieter moments, Florence found solace in her hobbies. She enjoyed spending time on her computer playing solitaire and indulging in a little online shopping. However, it was the memories made while traveling with her late husband, specifically their trips to his 10th Armored Battle of the Bulge reunions, which held a special place in her heart. As a proud Nana, she delighted in watching her grandsons grow and flourish.

John H. Sherbondy, age 89 of North Huntingdon, passed away on August 26, 2024 at Point Pleasant Retirement Home in North Versailles. He was born on April 22, 1935 in Larimer, a son of the late William Sherbondy and Emma McKay Sherbondy. John was the owner of Sidney Machine Tool Company, and was also employed as a bus driver for Norwin, Penn Trafford, and several local Catholic schools. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin and also formerly served as an usher for St. Agnes Church. John was a PIAA Basketball Official, he loved to golf, and he played senior softball into his late years, notably on the 2006 Jersey Pride Senior Softball World Series Championship team. He was a lifetime member of the Irwin Moose. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, William Sherbondy. Tracy M. Plassio, age 58 of North Huntingdon, passed away on August 26, 2024 at UPMC Shadyside. She was born on July 29, 1966 in Greensburg, a daughter of the late James West and Roberta Koontz West. Tracy was a member of New Hope Church, and she attended Mass at St. Agnes Church with her husband John every weekend. Following her graduation from Norwin High School in 1984, she went on to become a Legal Secretary at BCCZ Law Firm in Pittsburgh. Tracy was an excellent cook, she loved to tend to her garden, and she always looked forward to camping with her family, especially at Pymatuning Lake. As a mother and a wife, she was an inspirational leader to the entire family. Franklin James Remaley, 84, of North Huntingdon, PA, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024 at home. Frank was born on September 6, 1939, in North Bessemer, PA, to the late Melvin and Margaret Remaley. He graduated from Oakmont High School in 1957, and was a catcher for the Tigers of the Hot Stove League in Oakmont. He also caddied at Oakmont Country club, and was an avid golfer in his younger days. Frank met his lifelong companion, Toni Kardos, while he was working at G.C. Murphy in Vandergrift. Frank and Toni married in June of 1960, and at the end of April, 1963, they welcomed their only child, Lou Ann. Frank started his working career with G.C. Murphy Company at 16, starting as a stock boy and worked his way up to being a buyer. When Murphy’s was bought out, he then went on to be an electronics Sales Representative for DB Sales Group. Frank was always there to organize his daughter and her Ward Drive friends' kickball games, rides, and give advice when needed. He always attended Mass on Sundays at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in North Huntingdon. Through the years, Frank enjoyed camping, weekends with his family at Moraine camp lands, traveling with his wife throughout the country, visiting casinos, as well as dog and horse racing tracks. One of Frank’s true passions was the Penns Woods Civic Association where he presided as president for many years being instrumental in making Penns Woods Civic Association a thing of pride for all Penns Woods residents. Frank was his grandson’s biggest fan. He traveled far and near to watch Dante play in countless baseball and hockey games. He was always there to offer advice, wisdom, and to cheer Dante to victory. Frank easily made friends, finding the best in everyone, and would always be there for any reason for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Toni. Frank is survived by his daughter Lou Ann and her husband Greg Youhon of North Huntingdon, his grandson Dante and his wife, Melissa Youhon, siblings, Jerry Remaley (Judy) of Upper St. Clair, PA and Mary Ann Schavone (Lenny) of Jeannette, and many nieces and nephews. Courtney Marie Harkins, 31, of Irwin, died unexpectedly Friday August 23, 2024. She was born November 19, 1992 in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Larry C. and Allison L. (Weathers) Harkins of Irwin. Courtney loved the theater. She was a graduate of Penn-Trafford High School where she was a member of the drama guild and the marching band and served as drum major her senior year. She went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music education from Duquesne University and was involved with the theater group there. She performed with Stage Right, Split Stage, and Actors and Artists of Fayette County; among others. She also was an accomplished flutist and had given flute lessons. Courtney was not only regarded as an unprecedented talent in multiple facets on the stage, but a more incredible friend and confidant in the other aspects of her life. Everyone who loved Courtney found their life enriched by her presence. Her kindness, talent, and beauty poured over everyone who crossed her path. She consistently, without failure, brought grace, humility, and fondness for life to everyone around her. She was an animal lover, especially her three cats and her dog.

Irene "Nina" A. Cain, 100, of White Oak, formerly of Louisa, Virginia, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024. She was born in Duquesne on January 10, 1924 and was the daughter to the late Rowland and Pearl (Leader) Aston. She was the wife of the late Francis M. Cain, Jr. before his passing in November 7, 1994. Irene went to Robert Morris University to be trained in secretarial duties. She ended up working many years during the war as a secretary for the Mills. Part of her job requirements was to cross trace the furnaces being moved via railroad from Carrie Blast Furnace to the Homestead Mills. She had to climb the rail cars and count the inventory of each car to match her records on the paperwork. Later on, she moved to Virginia, and during her time there she attended the Open Door Christian Church. She was an avid reader and loved studying the bible with her friends and groups that she became a part of. Once moving back to PA, she attended First Evangelical Free Church and joined in many bible studies here as well. Some of her favorite things were her Dachshund/Doxie dogs, and just about any chocolate desserts - ice cream, candy, or cake.

Ann S. Guza, age 88, of Fairview Park, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 18, 2024. She moved to Clairton as a teenager where she eventually met and married the love of her life, the late Theodore "Ted" Guza. They raised their family and lived loyally and happily together until his passing in 1990. Ann worked for Three Rivers Bank as a Vault Supervisor for 30 years. Most remembered for her loving devotion to her family, particularly her grandchildren, and her love of animals, her skill in cross stitch, sewing, and quilting beautiful things which she passed down to her family. Sean is the beloved husband of Tracy Schweitzer for 20 years and father of Isabella Malloy, at home. Besides his father, he is also survived by foster sons Adam “AJ” Ehrlichman of Brookline and Anthony Urban; brothers Kevin Malloy of Elizabeth, Michael Malloy of Elizabeth, Joe (Maribeth) Malloy of Carroll Twp., and Martin Malloy of Elizabeth and nieces Marissa, Melanie and Aubrei Malloy. He was predeceased by his sister, Noreen Malloy.

Jamar Antonio Bethea, 45, of McKeesport, was born March 23, 1979, in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the beloved son of Glenn Griffin and Theresa Bethea. Jamar departed this life peacefully on August 14, 2024, at his residence in McKeesport, PA.
Jamar attended the McKeesport area school district where he graduated. Jamar had a love for culinary arts, and he used his skills to work in various restaurants around the Pittsburgh area. Where he enjoyed learning from each establishment how to cook numerous entrees. His last place of employment was the Golden Coral in Monroeville, PA., where he managed cooking as the Grill Master. He loved to cook for his family and friends. We were blessed to have a personal Chef!
He was also very talented in drawing. He had an artist’s eye for the beauty of what he saw and drew it into a beautiful work of art. Jamar could draw anything!
Jamar was Baptist at an early age at Christ temple where he received Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

He always looked forward to hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a talented woodworker and loved to work on new projects. Florence “Flo” Ganchuk, 97, of Glassport died Tuesday August 20, 2024. She is the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha (Wisniewski) Jablonski and beloved wife of the late Steve Ganchuk. She is survived by her daughter, with whom she lived with, Kathy (Bob) Miskanin of Glassport; sons Steven (Judy) Ganchuk of Liberty Boro, and Tom (Debra Ann) Ganchuk of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Aaron, Bethany, Kristin, Steven, Michael, David, Jennifer, Luke, Perry and Jospeh; also many great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Wiech. Flo was a cafeteria worker for South Allegheny Elementary School in Glassport and a member of St. Joachim and Anne Parish. Dorothy M. Brookhouser, 98, of Gibsonia, formerly of Elizabeth Township, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024 surrounded by love and her family. She was born November 18, 1925 in Huntington, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Margarette (Metzler) Boyer. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Brookhouser who passed away September 3, 2001. Dorothy was a member of the Boston United Methodist Church and the choir. She was also part of the Butler's Ladies Golf League and the Elizabeth Forward Community Chorus. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the former Preschool for Exceptional Children. She was a Bomb Inspector at the Christy Park Works during WWII and had received certificates for her service to the war effort. She was a retired dental assistant working 30 years for Dr. Charles Jones. Dorothy saw beauty in everything expressing that joy as an amateur artist in painting and poetry.

When Joann wasn’t working a double you could find her at one of her grandchildren’s sporting events from baseball & softball tournaments to cheer & dance competitions. Joann spent years as cheerleading coach for the McKeesport Little Tigers, served on the board for the McKeesport Girls softball league and enjoyed spending any remaining time in the day with her family. Brady. Ed was born August 23,1965 in McKeesport. Surrounded by his family and close friends,
holding his hands, sharing stories and reading scriptures, he ascended to heaven on Tuesday,
August 13th, 2024.
Edward is survived by his parents Eugene Brady (Sheila Brady) and Margaret Hart, his loving
wife of 34 years Maria Brady (Bernardo), daughters Rachael Denis (John Denis), Kailey Brady-
Jenkins (Joshua Jenkins), grandson William Denis, siblings Rebecca Brady, Nicholas Brady,
Patrick Brady (Carly Brady), Kelly Brady and niece Sophia Brady, along with his sister and
brother in-law Lisa Bernardo and Richard Packer and his best companion Buddy Bear the
Havanese. He was preceded in death by his brother Jeffrey Brady and in laws Anthony
Bernardo and Dorothy Bernardo.
Ed was private about his 14 month diagnosis with colon cancer that he never allowed to define
him. His empowered spirit, deep love for his family, and zest for life contributed to his ability to
surpass the odds.
Ed graduated from Serra Catholic High School in 1983, where he met in homeroom, the love of
his life Maria. Attending Penn State University, he graduated with a B.S. in Biology and worked
at UPMC in research. Earning his M.S. in Environmental Science from Duquesne University, he
was employed at UPMC Health Plan until 2002. He then joined forces with Maria at her
marketing business, Marakae Marketing, affording him valuable time to be a hands-on Dad.
As an incredible illustrator and artist his work was published in books, science journals, and
earned local awards. This passion led him to start Cia’s Jewelry in 2007, designing fine jewelry.
Hundreds of clients treasure their beautiful jewelry and engaging stories with Ed.
The crowning jewel in Ed’s life was his grandson William. Pap Pap and William shared a
special bond playing, watching the Pirates, and enjoying GiGi’s good cooking. William loved
creating race tracks with his Pap Pap and working with him at the jewelry store.
His deeply rooted love for his daughters was always his purpose. He affectionately earned the
nickname “Eddie Uber” as he drove them to many activities He loved traveling with his family
and friends-from the Outer Banks and Florida, to Punta Cana, Italy, Ireland, England, Hungary,
Austria and Germany. Ed was a certified scuba diver and flew a hang-glider in Italy.
Ed’s legacy lives on in the lives of everyone he knew, recounting stories of Ed making them
laugh or offering heartfelt advice. To know Ed, was to love Ed. His amazing personality was
larger than life and effortlessly made him the center of attention and best story teller. He will
fondly be remembered for his deep, genuine love of his wife, family and friends. His handsome
smile, beautiful blue eyes, humor and witty charm always lit up a room. With his strong faith
and life-well lived, we know he is reunited in heaven with God and his family.

A bright light has dimmed, Heaven has a new angel. Dolores M. (Haurilesko) Kalo, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. A life - long resident of Duquesne, Dolores was born on April 9, 1931 to the late George and Anna Haurilesko of Duquesne. She is survived by her daughter Kristine Kalo (Aron Lesko) of North Versailles, granddaughter Erica (Michael) Tokarsky of North Huntingdon, grandson Brian Kalo of Mount Pleasant, great grandchildren Eli, Faye, David and Andilyn, a sister Marion Sevich of Monogahela, a brother Robert Haurilesko of Fayette City, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dolores will meet her loving husband, John S. Kalo and sons David C. Kalo and Stephen P. Kalo who are waiting in Heaven. Dolores was a superior culinary artist, whipping up sumptuous meals and baked goods. No one can compare to her stuffed cabbage, pastries and sweets. She was also an accomplished ceramics painter and interior decorator. She loved to decorate her home for the seasons, making it beautiful and comfortable. Dolores was also an avid tea connoisseur, inviting many to her back porch to serve tea and goodies in pretty tea cups, she enjoyed gardening and digging in the dirt gave her peace, she also had fun on shopping trips with her daughter and seeing many places of interest..
Growing up, Dolores was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Duquesne, being the first to get married in the new Church, which her father helped build. She became a member of St. Stephen Hungarian Roman Catholic Church in McKeesport and most recently a member of Mary Mother of God Parish in McKeesport. Dolores's most important accomplishment was taking extremely good care of her son, Stephen, whom she adored and loved with her whole being. To her, family is most important. If you ever met Dolores, she had a way of making you feel at ease, as if you had known her for many years, with her sweet and kindly disposition. All who knew her, loved her. She will be sadly missed by many.

Ethel A. Hughes, 84, of Myrtle Beach passed away Sunday, August 4th, 2024 after a brief struggle with cancer. She was born in Pittsburgh on July 27, 1940 and is the daughter of the late Rudolph Leo and Margaret Mary (Alles) Anater. A graduate of Indiana University with a teaching degree in mathematics and history, she taught for eight years at Duquesne High School. During that time, she earned a Master's in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She became Executive Director for Public Relations at Median School of Pittsburgh, PA. She resigned from this position four years later after marrying Evan Hughes. Ethel was a choir member at St. Paul's Cathedral, in Pittsburgh, PA. A professed member of the Secular Franciscans for 33 years, she was most recently an officer with the St. Michael's Church chapter in Garden City, SC. Ethel enjoyed traveling, visiting the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe. She was an avid chess player and watercolorist. She lived in a variety of locations including Deland, FL, Tallahassee, FL, Janesville, WI, and Wichita, KS, where she pursued a pilot's license. She is survived by her brothers, Paul and Brian Anater, and her stepson Glenn Hughes. Ethel was preceded by her husband, Evan, and her baby daughter, Megan. Carol "Gram" Ann Basser (Orenyak), 85, passed peacefully at home on August 6, 2024, after a two-year battle with Mesothelioma; surrounded by her family and close friends. Born August 13, 1938, in Glassport, PA, daughter of John Orenyak and Elizabeth [Lipchak]. Preceded in death by her parents; and ex-husband, Ernest Basser and daughter Mary Beth Basser. Survived by her sister; Diane Truitt (Orenyak); daughter, Christine Jacobs, and her husband, Christopher; grandchildren, Brandon Jacobs, and his wife, Ashley [Totino], and Jason Stevans; and great-grandson, Adler Jacobs; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Native of Glassport and graduate of Glassport High School, she enjoyed roller skating and bowling with friends. Later residing in Duquesne, she had an impact on the community. Living in Liberty Borough, she was a part of the choir at St. Marks Catholic Church after retiring from her career at Hills / Ames. Anyone who knew Carol knew she was an animal lover and baseball fanatic, often referred to as the Pittsburgh Pirates' #1 fan. Walter L. Rook, 88, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 22, 1935 in Scotthaven and was the son of the late Walter and Mary Ann (Quintrell) Rook. He was the husband of 64 years to the late Sandra Jean "Sandy" (Hails) Rook, who passed away January 31, 2020. Walter was a graduate of McKeesport High School and went on to work at Firth Sterling Steel Co. before becoming a Police Officer for Elizabeth Township Police Department for 27 years and retiring as a Sergeant. Upon retirement from the Police Department, he worked part time as a starter for Butler's Golf Course. Walter was a long standing member of The Tall Cedars of Lebanon and was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to "Men's" Clubs almost everyday and going to his hunting camp. When he stopped hunting, he enjoyed riding ATVs in the woods with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter enjoyed spending many winters with his wife, in Florida, they also had a timeshare in Hilton Head for many years, where they enjoyed spending time. He also enjoyed golfing and was an avid Steelers fan. He will be greatly missed.

Albert Gonzales Sr., 81, died July 30, 2024, surrounded by family. Son of the late Joseph and Mollie (Weiss) Gonzales. Beloved husband of the late Jane D. (Andres) Gonzales. Our Dad loved spending time with his family but he especially enjoyed snow-birding in Florida with his wife. Nothing brought him more joy than sharing the plan of salvation and how much Jesus loves them with anyone Dad had the opportunity to meet. While we will certainly miss having our Dad and Pappy, we take great comfort in knowing he is in heaven rejoicing with his Savior. He has been reunited with the love of his life, Jane and his precious daughter, Taunya along with so many others that he was able to share his faith and testimony with. He is now healed and renewed.

Wayne Louis Battle, 68, of West Mifflin, was born November 9,1955, in McKeesport, PA. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Martha Olivia (James) Battle Sr.
Wayne attended and graduated from Duquesne High School in1975. Wayne was the oldest son of Joseph and Martha. Wayne worked for United States Steel Corp Irvin Works Plant for over 9 years and at Bob Evans Inc. as a prep and line cook for 25 years.
Wayne was raised in Duquesne and attended Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church at an early age with his parents and siblings. Despite his size Wayne loved to play and watch all sports and played Football, Baseball and Softball. Wayne loved cars, and his car was always clean. Although Wayne was small in stature his heart and toughness never let his size stop him from anything he wanted to do.
Wayne departed this life on August 7, 2024, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, father, Joseph A. Battle, Sr., mother, Martha Olivia (James) Battle, brother, Joseph A. Battle, Jr., and brother-in-law, Ronald Wooten.

Wayne “Jim” Harper, 77, of North Versailles, died Tuesday August 6, 2024 at home. He was born December 14, 1946 in Braddock, a son of the late Edwin James and Margaret (Peckalnsky) Harper and was also preceded in death by siblings Edwin T. Harper and Mary Ann Stanchik. Jim retired from the maintenance department at East Allegheny School District after 42 years’ service and had served as president of the support personnel union. He started his firefighting career at the age of 15 and was a longtime member and chief of the former Dixon Hollow Volunteer Fire Department, was a founding member and president of FDNV after the merger of the North Versailles Township fire departments, and served as treasurer of the North Versailles Fire Department Relief Association. He enjoyed going to camp and was a founding member of the Five Pines Camp.

Annette was a beautician, and had two salons in the White Oak area, as well as in her home. Annette was an excellent cook and baker, who was known for her delicious soups and ice cream cake. She loved her family and hosting sleepovers with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

He began his working career at age 13 at a butcher shop in McKeesport, became a bricklayer by trade and then started Garrett Construction Company. In addition to Kynor's Corner, he was also proprietor of the former Olympic Lounge, and the former Christy Inn. He was a member of Polaris Lodge 375 F & AM., was former president of the Olympia Shopping Center Association, and served on Council in Versailles Borough. Over the years through Bike Runs and Jamborees, Garrett raised money for Children's Hospital and MS. He also organized many softball teams.

On the evening of August 2nd, 2024, Richard Johann Strauss Del Signore passed away peacefully at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Anthony, and his parents, Mary (Hadelovich from Blaine Hill) Del Signore, and Antonio Del Signore. He is survived by his youngest brother Ramon, four first cousins, eight nieces and nephews, and much extended family.
Richard was born on December 17, 1926, in McKeesport PA, and grew up in the Grandview area. His immediate family consisted of four brothers and their parents. His father Antonio Del Signore, who immigrated from Abruzzi, Italy, died in 1933 as the result of an accident at the Penn McKee Hotel in McKeesport, where he was employed as a chef. His tragic death at the height of the Great Depression left the four boys and their mother on their own, but not penniless. Antonio’s foresight to have life insurance allowed the young family to keep their home and move forward. Richard and his three brothers worked hard along with their mother, to make ends meet and keep the family together as they went through school and attended church at McKeesport’s First Methodist Church.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Karen; brother-in-law, John Polak; and sister-in-law, Cynthia Smider. She leaves many friends and family members behind who will miss her greatly, as well as four cats (Toby, Ripley, Bailey, and Bruno) who adored her, and miss her very much.

Kenneth T. Kunkel, age 83, of Elizabeth Twp., passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at UPMC Mercy. An Army veteran, he retired as a road mechanic for Beckwith Machinery in Delmont. He was a member of Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish, St. Michael Church in Elizabeth Twp. where he was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a fish fry volunteer. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 66 and the Elizabeth Twp. Wood Carvers, he loved to garden, and he could fix anything. When he left for work, his truck was the alarm clock for his neighbors. He always said, "A job worth doing is a job worth doing right." Born September 30, 1940 in West Mifflin, he was a son of the late Kenneth S. and Agnes F. (Blank) Kunkel. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda L. (Werner) Kunkel; daughters, Kelly (Ray) Ramey of Ingomar, Kara (Bill) Miles of Elizabeth Twp. and Karyn (the late Dan) Arokhaty of Elizabeth Twp.; grandchildren, Billy (Rachel) Miles, Claire (Ben Fanelli) Miles, Isabelle Ramey and Justin (Faith Vandermeir) Ramey; brothers, James (Carolyn) Kunkel of Finleyville, Charles (Debbie) Kunkel of Monongahela and Dennis (Janet) Kunkel of Jefferson Hills; also, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, David and Gerald Kunkel, and sister, Kathy Jordan. Friends will be received in the Paul E. Robert William Meredith, 86, of White Oak, passed away on Thursday August 1, 2024. He was born on April 21, 1938 in Uniontown and was the son of the late Harry B. and Emily Mae (Christopher) Meredith. Robert graduated from McKeesport High School in 1956 and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University and a Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After college, he returned to his alma mater to teach biology for 2 years, before becoming the Principal of Frances McClure Junior High. He also served as the Principal of McKeesport High School. He loved all of his students and would always express "Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger." He was also a Free Mason at the Polaris Lodge No. 375, and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Stanley Lichtenstein, 91, of White Oak, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was born February 5, 1933 in McKeesport and was the son of the late Sam and Sadye (Friedman) Lichtenstein. He was the husband of the late Helen (Kestenbaum) Lichtenstein who passed away March 21, 2018. They were married for 67 years. Stanley was a member of Gemilas Chesed Congregation and was a US Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. For his service he received the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Catherine Marie Thompson (nee Ullrich), 105, of the Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The daughter of the late Bernhard (Ben) Gustave Ullrich and Louise Francis (Salmon) Ullrich, she was born on May 28, 1919, in Elizabeth. Catherine graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1937 and the following year received her diploma from Maison Frederic School of Beauty Culture in Pittsburgh. She lived in Elizabeth until she was 88. During that time, she worked as a beautician in several local shops and later as the in-store baker for Marraccini's grocery stores. She was a life-long member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church where she was a faithful kitchen worker for the many luncheons and dinners served at the Church. For many years she was a delivery driver for Meal on Wheels. Catherine was a member of the local lodges of the Order of Easter Star and the Order of Amaranth. Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Harry Arter Thompson and her sisters, Emma Blanche Zadroga and Martha Jane Ullrich. She will be missed and forever loved by her daughter, Kathryn (Kay) Louise Tsikopoulos (George) and her son, Glenn Harry Thompson (Linda); her grandchildren, Deryk Thompson (Jen) and Cori Hill (Mitchell); and her great grandsons, Owen and Jackson Hill. Catherine will be remembered as a selfless helper and caregiver to friends and family, always willing to place her interests and needs on hold, with never an expectation of anything in return. She was a capable, practical and highly independent person with broad talents and skills. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Passavant for their excellent care throughout her time there and the Harmony-Zelienople United Methodist Church for including her as one of their own for the years she lived independently at Passavant. Stanley Paul Lenhart, 90, of N. Huntingdon peacefully passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024 at Walden’s View. He was born August 31, 1933 in Circleville, a son of the late Joseph Rush and Ruby (Davidson) Lenhart. Prior to his retirement, Paul was the owner and operator of Lenhart’s Service Center. He was a graduate of North Huntingdon High School and a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Korean War. Paul was a member of St. Agnes Church and dedicated 25 years of service as fire chief for Circleville Vol. Fire Dept. Paul enjoyed traveling with his family and friends, driving his pontoon boat and spending time with his family, especially during the holidays. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, David L. Morton and Charles David Tromm; brothers, Donald, Joseph and David Lenhart; sisters, Ruth Zatorsky, Mary Lois Stough and Carolyn Weiss. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Patricia Mary (Petrisko) Lenhart; son, Kenneth (Anna) Lenhart; daughters, Cynthia Morton, Jean Tromm and Marianne (Craig) Weston. It is with great sadness that the family of Arlene J. Clawson-Dodds, 69, of Greenock, formerly of Clairton, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at home. Arlene was born September 25, 1954 in McKeesport and was the daughter of the late Joshua J. Smith, Jr. and the late Margaret (Warhol) Smith. She was the wife of the late Robert J. "Bob" Dodds, who passed away March 26, 2008. Arlene graduated from Clairton High School in 1972 and would retire after 36.5 years of service working as a caseworker for The PA Department of Welfare in 2009. Then she helped cook meals for The Sisters of the Divine Redeemer-Motherhouse for 10 years, before retiring for good in 2020. Arlene was the sweetest and kindest person, and she never had a bad word to say about anyone. She loved her family so much, especially being "boo" to her young granddaughters, Alana and Chloe. She lived every day for her family and we are all better people because she was such an important person in our lives. She will be greatly missed, but the many beautiful memories we have of her will remain forever.
