Born January 19, 1935 in Versailles, he was a son of the late Charles James and Julia A. (Mallak) Derkas. A former carpet installer for Ruben's Furniture Company in McKeesport who also worked as a warehouseman for Mead Paper Company, Charles was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Christy Park and a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War.
