Thomas D. Lucas, age 72 of Duquesne, formerly of Lincoln Borough, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at home. A retired crane operator from Tube City Metal Works, Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved going to flea markets. Born in McKeesport on November 13, 1951, he was a son of the late Andrew J. Lucas and the late Dolores (Brown) Lucas. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara A. (Dodds) Lucas; children, Susan (William Forkey) Dunnett of Glassport, Micheal (Heather) Lucas of Lincoln Borough, Amy (Robert) Bodzer of Glassport, Marcella (James) Slanina of Munhall, Laura Perez of Duquesne, and George Vucin of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Madison, Avery, Micheal, Jared, Taylor, Lindy, Tanner, Jason, Larz, Baun, Brianna, James, and Derrick; great-grandchildren, Liam, Norah, Julian, Emerson, Ash, and Raina Louise; five siblings, Madeline Randig of Lincoln Borough, Dianne Casson of Cincinnati, OH, John Lucas of Elizabeth Twp., Delores Sheridan of Stratford, CT, and Anna Dougherty of Glassport; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Dobrich. Friends will be received at the Paul E. Bekavac Funeral Home, 221 N Second Avenue, Elizabeth on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, from 3-7 PM. Judith Ann  Spell, 79, of White Oak, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, peacefully at home during her nightly Jeopardy.  Judy is the wife of the late Robert Spell and beloved mother of Hilary Spell and the late James McCombs.  She is survived by her brother and sisters in laws, Edie (the late Jack) Spell and William and Debbie Spell; special niece Bonnie (Dan) Weissert; nephews Robert Riemenschneider, Jack (Karen) Spell and Bill Spell; nieces Jenna (Jay) Tewell and Lisa Spell; also great nieces and nephews; great friends Kathy Caparelli and Jan Stojanovic; godson Craig Stojanovic.  In addition to her parents, Clyde and Genevieve (Mellinger) Riemenschneider, she was preceded in death by her brothers Ray and Clyde (the late Audrey) Riemenschneider. Judy was a graduate of McKeesport High School, class of 1962, and California University.  She was proud of her career as an English Teacher for South Allegheny School District and was a member of the McKeesport College Club and First Presbyterian Church in Duquesne.  Special thank you to Karen from AHN Hospice and the girls, Cindy, Dakota, Dolly, Norma and Taya.  Thank you for being there and helping her be at home.  Friends will be received at the Teichart-Gracan Funeral Home, Duquesne on Monday from 2 to 8 and on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church from 10 to 11, at which time a funeral service will be held with Rev. Judy Slater.  Interment following Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

 


Olga Mary (Knezevich) Pribanich

Olga Mary (Knezevich) Pribanich, 100, a former long-time resident of Glassport, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by her loving daughter and son-in-law, with whom she resided. The oldest of four children, she was born on October 6, 1923, in Donora, Pennsylvania to the late Nicholas Knezevich and the late Sima Bumber Knezevich. Olga was the loving wife of the late John Pribanich. She is survived by her daughters Kathleen (William) Bevil of Calvert City, KY, Janice (Edward) Gambone of Valrico, FL, and son John R. Pribanich (Rozanna) of East McKeesport, PA.  She is also survived by six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Olga was preceded in death by her husband John Pribanich, her parents Nicholas and Sima Bumber Knezevich, daughter Christine Spanbauer, brothers Anthony and Rudolph, and sister Lidy. She was a graduate of Glassport High School Class of 1941 and was a former owner and bookkeeper for Cher-Ban Tire Service, Inc. in North Versailles, PA. Olga was a former member of Sacred Heart Croatian Catholic Church in McKeesport, PA, and later St. Martin de Porres where she was involved with the church choir, as well as the the Croatian Fraternal Union. Her hobbies included travel, duckpin bowling, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 noon at E.C. After high school, Ken obtained a degree from the University of Northwestern Ohio as an Auto Mechanic, and eventually training for Diesel. He later began working on heavy machinery and operating equipment for a fracking company- NexTier, who he has been with for several years. In addition to his parents, Ken is survived by his brother, Patrick (Emily) Coulter of Forward Township, and his aunt & uncle, Carol & Ken Soubeyrand of Clairton - as well as so many loving friends. "Butch" Spurgeon, Jr., age 62, of McKeesport, died at home on September 9, 2024.  Born November 29, 1961, in McKeesport, he was the son of Roger Spurgeon, Sr. and the late Virginia (Thayer) Spurgeon and husband of Heidi (Watts) Spurgeon.  Roger will be remembered for his love of camp at Deep Creek, where he spent many joyful moments, especially after retirement, enjoying boating on the lake, relaxing by a fire, and playing cards with his family, particularly enjoying spirited games of 500 and Gin.  He was also a lifelong Steelers fan, a member of the 11th Ward Club, and a John Wayne fan.  Roger's laid-back personality and his penchant for having fun endeared him to those around him, leaving cherished memories that will forever be held dear by his family and friends.  His presence will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Neil Robert Jones, 62, of Irwin, passed away surrounded by his family on September 9, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 25, 1961 in McKeesport, PA. He was the son of Betty Lou (Culbert) Jones and the late James A. Jones. Neil graduated as valedictorian from McKeesport High School in 1979, where he was also a captain of the swim team. He earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Grove City College and later obtained a Master's in Education from Penn State University. In the 1980s, Neil became a paramedic with White Oak Rescue Squad. He went on to work with the Center for Emergency Medicine, where he taught pediatric trauma care, served as a flight medic for Stat MedEvac, and worked as a manager at Children's Hospital. He also taught at the Community College of Allegheny County.

He was born on January 31, 2003 in Monroeville, a son of Shawn Patterson and Patricia Novak Patterson. Alec was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin, and a graduate of Norwin High School in the Class of 2021. He had a passion for music, was a talented pianist, and loved to play the tuba in the Norwin Band. Alec was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree with dual majors in both Secondary Education and History. He was a Da Vinci Scholar and earned a spot on the Dean's List during all four years of his schooling. Following his collegiate graduation, Alec became a Student-Teacher at Greater Latrobe High School, a role which he cherished. Alec was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Mary Jane Patterson, and maternal grandparents Paul and Mary Lou Novak. In addition to his parents, Alec is survived by his paternal grandmother, Sandra Patterson (and the late Duayne Patterson), cousins, Alexander, Michael, Natalie, Annie, Gracie, Jimmy, Mila, Aubree, Noah, and aunts & uncles, Paula, Marianne, Kerie, Lee, and Dean. Friends will be received at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Joseph “Joe” Howard Lynch age 70, of Pickerington Ohio passed away on September 6th 2024. Joe was born February 16th in Pittsburgh, PA to Marguerite H. (Pfalzgarff) and Nelson C. Lynch. Joe lived in Perry, Ohio for 35 years before moving to Pickerington Ohio. He was a graduate of West Mifflin High School in PA and later Tiffin University. He prioritized education and among his proudest achievements was supporting all of his children in earning college degrees. Joe met the love of his life, Robin Lynn Filer, at 17 years old while working at Murphy Mart. They married in 1975 beginning their eternal adventure together. Together they built a family that was his greatest source of joy. Joe loved and served others throughout his life as a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. Joe was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving in many capacities including bishoprics, youth group leader, and as a Seventy. Professionally Joe was successful in several capacities, most notably spending 30 years as a member of Health Physics/Radiation Protection department at the Perry Nuclear Plant. He retired in 2017 to enjoy traveling with Robin and visiting his beloved grandchildren. Joe loved his family, friends, and dogs. He enjoyed attending Cleveland baseball games, 60’s music, traveling, and watching science fiction movies/tv. He came from a long line of Master Carpenters and honed his skill from working with his own father. Joe enjoyed building everything from beds and bookshelves to a multi room addition on the family home in Perry.

He was a 1967 graduate of Clairton High School, a Navy Veteran, and the owner of the Blue Bird Restaurant in Clairton, a family business that was started by his grandparents George and Ann (Jones) Romanos. In his spare-time, he enjoyed working on cars. Born on August 3, 1948, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late George “Buggy” Romanos, Jr. and the late Laura Bernardi Romanos. George is survived by daughter Lisa Romanos of Rostraver, granddaughter Farrah Pavlack of Rostraver, great-grandchildren Legacy Jones and Treasure Jones of Rostraver, cousins, nieces and nephews, and loving dog Charisma. He was preceded in death by his parents. He will be greatly missed. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. at S.M. Born in McKeesport on August 30, 1952, he was the son of the late Paul “Iggy” and Frances (Tachoir) Shultz. He was a mail carrier for the Postal Service and a member of St. Joseph Church of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. He collected Hot Wheels cars, stamps, coins and Beatles music. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Kenneth W. Shultz of Alexandria, LA, Robert Shultz of Duquesne, Daniel (Linda) Shultz of Duquesne, Cathy (William) Leonard of Holly Springs, NC and Maryanne Shultz of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins.

In a final act of selflessness, Larry donated his organs to CORE to help others get life saving transplants.

Charles J. Farkas, age 88, of White Oak, PA, died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 8, 2024. He was born in McKeesport, PA on December 14, 1935 and was the son of the late Charles and Mary Yurjevsic Farkas. He was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish, St. Angela Merici Church. He was employed by Farkas Trucking and then later was the owner/operator for 63 years. He then retired from Pleasant Trucking. (He took his first trip to Chicago at the age of fourteen, all on his own.) He enjoyed truck magazines, going to truck shows in Harrisburg with his friend, Bernie, and always enjoyed talking trucks. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 30, White Oak Boro Volunteer Fire Company, #1 (retired), and Wheels of Time, Transport Topic, and Landline. He was honorably discharged veteran from the United States Army.

Robert J. Hankey, age 86 of North Huntingdon, passed away on September 7, 2024 at Harmony Physical Rehabilitation in Monroeville.  He was born on November 11, 1937 in Ligonier, a son of the late Clyde Hankey and Daisy Hutchinson Hankey.  Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having retired after 20 years of service. He was employed as a Steel Mill Worker for U.S. Steel with over 30 years of experience. In his free time, Robert looked forward to riding motorcycles, water skiing and snow skiing.  Most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia in 2016, and two brothers, Eugene and Charles Hankey.  He is survived by one son, Robert Hankey (Carol), one daughter, Tammy Barlock (Timothy), one brother, Clyde Hankey (Pat), one sister-in-law, Doris Hankey, grandchildren Matthew Hankey (Christina), Lauren Hankey, and Tyler Barlock (Rachel), and his fiancee, Mary Ann Pici. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 3-7 PM at the James W. Beloved wife of James Hoffman, Patty is also survived by her sister Marlene Sharp Murray, her son Kenneth Bachman, her daughter Collette Bachman Miller, and her grandchildren Kaia Bachman, Rachael Bachman Miller, Anya Bachman Miller, and Kenneth Bachman Jr. She was preceded in death by her daughter Jennifer Bachman Wentroble, her sister Susan Sharp Brown, and her stepfather Walter Maksymowicz.  Prior to her retirement she was employed as parts manager at Three Rivers BMW, Bill Gray Subaru, and Yenko Subaru in Pittsburgh, PA. Patty was an unflagging giver, caretaker, and helper. Patty would help anyone with anything at any time. She put the needs of others before herself and was passionate about preserving and strengthening family connections and traditions. Patty loved spending time with her grandchildren and family, tending to her flower gardens, and her rescue Basset Hounds. Patty held honesty and fairness at the highest level. She was a vibrant, energetic person with an infectious upbeat spirit who dedicated her life to improving our community and the lives of others. She was devoted to activating others on local environmental and quality of life issues. She was involved in multiple community causes as well as local environmental causes, especially air and water quality issues. She was always ready to assist others in fighting against things that needed to be changed. Whether it was her work with Yough Communities CARE or community committees, her passion for others and drive will never be forgotten by all those fortunate enough to call her a friend. Her involvement included being a member of the Elizabeth Township Democratic Committee and to help those running for office, helping others understand the candidates and issues, and presenting current concerns to government officials.

James E. Armstrong Sr., age 89, of North Huntingdon, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was born March 10, 1935 in Buckhannon, West Virginia, a son of the late Wilbert and Dortha (Hollen) Armstrong.

He was a long-time member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Irwin where he participated in the Saturday Men’s Group and worked the Burger Bash and Fish Fry events.

He graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School in 1954. He worked for over 41 years at the Tube City Iron and Metal in West Mifflin as a purchasing agent, store room manager and in the personnel department.

He was a member of the Elks and the Manor American Legion.

She was previously employed by Right at Home as a direct care worker. Iesha attended Gateway High School in Monroeville where she graduated in 2009and then continued on to Bella Capelli Academy in Monroeville, through their Cosmetology Program with an education in Hair, Nails, Skincare and Makeup.

As a youth. she was a member of Zion Baptist Church and the youth choir.

She loved to travel and eat exotic foods; in addition to spending time on the beach, as evident with her travels to Hawaii, Cancun and Cozumel, Mexico, St. Augustine and as a young child, she traveled to Niagara Falls, Canada, New York, Washington DC and Disney World.

John M. Salopek, age 83, of North Huntingdon passed away on September 2, 2024 at Transitions Health Care.  He was born on August 2, 1941 in McKeesport, a son of the late Michael John and Amelia Esek Salopek. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He graduated from Munhall High School in 1959 prior to his employment as a supervisor with U.S. Steel Clairton Works for 34 years until retiring in 1999.  John was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church as well as the local Penns Woods Civic Association in North Huntingdon and the American Croatian Club in Duquesne.  He was a longtime member of the White Oak Rod and Gun Club, and also belonged to the National Wildlife Turkey Federation.  John enjoyed his Thursday night golf league with his co-workers at 7-Springs, and was a coach for PAL little league in North Huntingdon.  John was an avid hunter and fisherman.  A notable highlight in his life was a 10-day fishing trip to Alaska.  John lived his life to the fullest until he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2014.  Even then, he always looked on the bright side.  His family was always first in his life.  He was so proud of his three sons and the responsible men they have become.  John is survived by his loving wife, Oletha "Bunny" Yates Salopek, sons Michael (Charlene), Mark (Liza), Kirk (Sarah), seven grandchildren Ashton, Trevor (Hayley), Alexis, Giselle, Isabella, Liam, and Gavin, two brothers Anthony (Barbara) and David (Ann), and many friends.  Special appreciation goes out to the staff at Amedisys Hospice of Monongahela and Scottdale for the outstanding care they provided. Memorials can be made to them, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.  Friends will be received at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon on Wednesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.
