Stoyanka Popovich Vranesevich, age 90, of McKeesport, died Sunday, May 21, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Very Rev. Dr. Milan G. and Zoritza Popovich. She was born in Crepaya, Yugoslavia on October 16, 1926 and was preceded in death by her husband Milan and brothers Dushan and Stoyan Popovich. Stoyanka earned her B.A. degree from Carnegie Mellon University (formerly Carnegie Technical Institute). She was a loving mother to her children Xenia and Milan of McKeesport, Zora Russell of Serento Florida, grandson George Russell and great grandson Dalton; brothers, retired Superior Court Judge Zoran Popovich of Myrtle Beach, SC; Ray (Shirley) Popovich of Greentree, PA, along with nieces and nephews. Stoyanka was an active member of the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne and choir member for more than twenty years. She was one of the founding members of the St. Sava Mothers’ Club and danced with the Balkan Dancers. Friends will be received Tuesday, May 23nd from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Striffler’s of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, Supervisor 412-678-6177) with Mali Pomen Services at 7:30 pm. Burial services will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church with Very Rev. Stavrofor Stevan G. Rocknage officiating. Entombment will follow at McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery Mausoleum. Janet M. Cox, age 79 of Jeannette, died May 8, 2017.  She was born in Liberty Borough on April 7, 1938, daughter of the late Charles and Grace Harper Thompson. She was a member of the Keystone Christian Church, and former organist at the First Christian Church of McKeesport and the Liberty Borough Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Alan “Pete” D. Cox of Jeannette; children, Donald (Jeanine) Snider of Scottdale, PA; Daniel Snider of Jamestown, SC; Denise (Gerald) Eisaman of Elizabeth Twp.; Susan Cox of North Versailles; David (Michelle) Cox of Orting, WA; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother, Charles Thompson, Jr.; and sister, Grace Thompson.

Margie S. Smyrnes (nee Stoupis)

Margie S. Smyrnes (nee Stoupis) passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 from congestive heart failure, surrounded by family and friends. It would have been her 71st wedding anniversary.

Margie, born in Cleveland, OH on December 5, 1926, was the daughter of Koula Logaras Stoupis and George Stoupis of McKeesport. Her beloved younger brother, Manuel G. Stoupis predeceased her in September 2014.

She was the co-owner, from 1956 to 1989, of the former Flair Cleaners and Home Laundry in White Oak, PA with the love of her life and partner in marriage and business, Michael V. (Mike) Smyrnes who predeceased her in October 2015.

She married her high school sweetheart on May 5, 1946 after graduating co-valedictorian and year book editor of her McKeesport High School class of 1945.  Her first job was an executive secretary for the GC Murphy company.

After World War II, Margie and Mike had several business adventures as partners in Paterson NJ, New York City and Canton, OH before moving back to McKeesport and North Huntington, PA.

Always active in the church, Margie was a former choir director of the Greek Church of the Annunciation when it was located in McKeesport. After the parish moved to White Oak in 1966, she was active in the McKeesport International Villiage with her church and was President of its Philoptochos for several years.

As President of the Ridge Road Women’s Club, she spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the purchase of the first modern ambulance for Rescue 8 paramedics in North Huntington.

Margie, despite her full-time work as a business woman, always had time for whoever needed help. She had boundless energy, tenacity, wit, intelligence and sage advice. Her math skills were legendary. Margie was also a Girl Scout troop leader for 10 years.

She enjoyed flying with her husband in his Cessna airplane, sewing, gardening, music, and reading articles on medical research and finance. She was also a good Canasta player.

She is survived by daughters, Peggy (Dr. Karl Williams) Smyrnes-Williams of Squirrel Hill; Kathleen S. (Eric) White of Bradford Woods; and grandson, Michael E.C.  Williams of Pittsburgh; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.

In addition to her beloved husband, daughters and their husbands, her absolute joy was her grandson, Michael E.C.  Williams. She taught him to play checkers, card and math games and the video game Zelda.

Friends will be received at Striffler’s of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Monday May 8th from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Trisagion at 7:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday May 9th, 10:00 am at the Greek Church of the Annunciation in White Oak with visitation 1 hour prior to service at church. Funeral Services will be co-officiated by Father William Zotis and Father Christopher Bender. Entombment will follow in the Lebanon Chapel Mausoleum.

Remembrances in Margie’s name may be made to the Eye and Ear Research Foundation of the University of Pittsburgh, the Philoptochos of McKeesport, or the American College of Lakota Sioux.

Veronica Jean Karichko Russin, age 95, originally of McKeesport died Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Grove at Irwin.  She was born February 28, 1922 in Duquesne, the daughter of the late John and Mary Polakovsky Karichko.

During World War II she worked for US Steel in Duquesne, and after the war as an operator and supervisor for Bell Telephone. 

She is survived by her children, Donna (Matt) Clay of Greensburg, Judi  (Tom) Ridge of Scottsdale, Arizona, Steven Russin and Judy Thomas of Greenock, Lois (Greg) Stepansky of North Huntingdon, Valerie (Mark) Bradley of Manor and Robert Russin of North Versailles; grandchildren, W. Russin (Vivian) Clay, Steve Russin, Katherine (Phil) Horrell and Jake Stepansky; great-grandson, Phillip Mathew; numerous nieces and nephews; companion, Jim Devlin and dear friend, Jodilynn Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen and siblings, Anna Kerekach, Pauline Cowell, and John, Joseph, Michael, Frank, and Robert Karichko. 

The family would like to thank the staff at The Grove in Irwin for their loving and compassionate care.

William James Petro, age 66 of Plum Borough, died Thursday, April 27, 2017.  He was born on September 11, 1950 in McKeesport and is the son on the Late John W. and Ruth Hughes Petro.  He served in the Navy and retired from the former Perkin Elmer Corporation.  He also enjoyed listening to music and playing the guitar and piano.
